  • Family-friendly site under two kilometres from the coast
  • Within five kilometres of Omaha beach and 10 kilometres from Bayeux
  • High season bar-restaurant and takeaway

Two top Normandy destinations are a breeze to get to from family-friendly Camping L'Hypo'Camp: the World War II memorial of Omaha beach (five kilometres) and the spectacular sight of the Bayeux Tapestry, within 10.

And if you're on hol with small sorts who are eye rolling at either option? You'll also be placed a kilometre or so from the nearest sandy beach, and within easy day trip reach of the Calvados coastal resorts of Deauville and Trouville. Horse riding and canoeing can be booked within five kilometres.

Kids should also be stoked at the magic shows on site, part of a busy entertainment programme that includes music performances and karaoke, and at the good-sized playground with seesaw and swings. Grownup concerns are covered at the high season bar-restaurant and takeaway, and amenities at the two well-maintained shower and toilet blocks.

L'Hypo'Camp is outside the coastal commune of Colleville-sur-Mer, just under 40 kilometres from Calvados department capital Caen. Along with the foodie options at the summer bar-restaurant, a small grocery shop is also on site, and barbecues are allowed.

Good atmosphere and a warm welcome from the manager. Bar and restaurant are good and excellent value for money. Excellent location for those wanting to visit war memorials, Omaha beach and similar. We visited the Overlord museum which was very well presented and extremely informative. There are lots of beautiful surrounding villages with tributes to WW2 and the liberation of Europe.

Lovely quiet rural site. Lovely trees and planting. Good sized pitch. Very well maintained. Facilities basic but perfectly serviceable, clean and well maintained. Welcoming and helpful staff. Bar and children's play area if you need it. Lovely walk along lane and easy access to Omaha beach. Dairy farm next door with own little farm shop.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike really. Site shop stocked just basic dry goods but there were shops and supermarket in next town which will cater for everything you need. Electric hook up a little temperamental when all hook up points in use.
Slight traffic noise from nearby road but does quieten down at night and not a problem as blends in with sound of the sea.
Wifi patchy and slow at times.

We liked the campsite. On arrival we had quick and easy check-in and paid the outstanding balance on arrival. We had an electric hook up that was within easy distance. (Purchased a euro plug convertor/adaptor before leaving England, however this was not required on this site). We were placed by the small park which our kids made good use off including the ping pong table (free) and table football (€0.50 for 8 balls).
There were two wash blocks on the site, we only used one which was by our pitch and we always found this to be clean and useable, seperate shower, sink and Toilet cubicals. (Toilets dont have seats, however we found this more hygenic, also you supply your own toilet roll).
There was only 1 washing machine onsite which we used 3 times without any problems, Tumble dryer too however the weather was so good we hung up on the drying horse which is kept by the machine.
We didnt use the campsite Bar or order from there food menu but the service was there if needed.
The pictches were of good size and the ground was good for knocking in pegs.
The nearby beach at Omaha was very clean and tidy, lovely sandy beach which we all enjoyed. Good location by car or bike but nothing within walking distance.
The campsite staff spoke very good english which is good because my French is terribble.
This was a basic campsite but we knew this before booking so with that in mind i was very happy with our stay and would stay at this campsite again if i return to this part of France. We did enjoy Omaha also and found lots of nearby DDay attractions to explore. Nearby port bessin was also a good visit.

    Disliked:

Free Wifi available but worked a little slowly at times. Depends was your using it for. Checking emails and facebook updates is fine but not fast for live streaming Netflix etc.

Local attractions

They mightn't overly excite the kids, but the Normandy tourist destinations of Omaha beach and the Bayeux Tapestry see hundreds of thousands of visitors to this region every year.

The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is at the site's local town of Colleville-sur-Mer, overlooking the beach; at Bayeux, take time to see the town as well as its famous tapestry, stopping off at the 11th-century cathedral, the Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy, and, if you're here for World War II remembrance, the British war cemetery just outside town.

The fishing, horse riding and canoeing within the same distance should get the offspring interested, as should the local sands within a kilometre, and the fishing boat views from the harbour of Port-en-Bessin, three kilometres from the site. About 40 kilometres away, the zoological park of Jurques has over 650 animals from 150 species.

The World War II memorial and museum of La Pointe du Hoc is 10 kilometres away.
