- Peaceful site on the River Bednja, a 10-minute walk from Ludbreg
- Varaždin half an hour’s drive; Trakoscan Castle an hour and 10 minutes
- Dogs welcome; outdoor kitchen and covered terrace; near a Wine Road
Fancy a trip to the Centre of the World? Well, Ludbreg, a town a half-hour drive from Varaždin, in northern Croatia, claims to be just that as a result of a 19th-century geographical experiment. And on the outskirts of Ludbreg, on the banks of the River Bednja, is peaceful, family-friendly My Little Swan.
The site has spacious pitches with water and drainage hook-up points for campervans and motorhomes. Facilities include an outdoor kitchen (with a communal fridge) and picnic tables, plus a washing-up area (in addition to a toilet/shower block, of course).
With a fishing club a 10-minute walk away, keen anglers might feel right at home here. Wine enthusiasts, too, since the surrounding hills are covered in vineyards producing – among other wines – delicious Rieslings, Chardonnays and Cabernets. A designated Wine Road snakes past wineries, cellars and tasting rooms where you can also sample local cheese and other specialities. And anything you purchase during your wine exploration, you can sip under the covered terrace back on site as you take in the splendid countryside around you.
For those who are travelling with their canine buddy, there are shaded walks on Otok Mladosti (aka the Island of Youth; five minutes’ drive or a half-hour walk), not to mention plenty of hiking and cycling trails, plus a mountain-bike park on the northern shore of Lake Varaždin (35 minutes).

Local attractions
In Ludbreg (10 minutes’ walk), the Shrine of the Precious Blood of Christ commemorates a 15th-century miracle and is one of the country’s most important pilgrimage sites. From there, cross the River Bednja to reach Castle Batthyany-Strattmann, where the Chapel of the Holy Cross displays a collection of religious artefacts.
Varaždin (half an hour’s drive), at the south-westernmost tip of the lake of the same name, has a pretty town centre with pastel-coloured Baroque buildings. The Stari Grad Castle is home to a well-curated collection of furnishings from the Renaissance to the Art Deco years, while Herzer Palace displays insects and bugs, plus plant specimens.
Overlooking an area of lush, dense forest, Trakoscan Castle (an hour and 10 minutes) started life as a fortress in the 13th century. Check out the collections of weapons, animal trophies and tableware, or keep an eye on the event calendar for workshops, talks and temporary exhibitions.
