  • Dog-friendly wooden cabins in the middle of a forest with a stream
  • An hour and 45 minutes’ drive from Cali; hikes in the local area
  • Private outdoor shower and hot tub with spring water; breakfast served
A wooden cabin in the middle of a forest with a running-water stream… Loma Roja is like a little Colombian neverland, with its green forest canopies, fitted out with swings and hammocks. An hour and 45 minutes’ drive away from Cali, famed for its salsa clubs and historic sites, you’ll have plenty of time to hike, snooze and salsa out in the green Valle landscapes around the site. Breakfast is served on site and easy to order (along with some other foods), so you’ll have a full tummy in preparation for activities like horse-riding, paragliding and hiking in the local area. Feel free to really put your all into it, because each cabin at Loma Roja is equipped with its own hot tub supplied with spring water and water jets for a water-based massage. There’s a supermarket within 25 minutes’ drive of the site if you’ve got some holiday specialties you’d like to rustle up. There’s also a small shared kitchen on site to help with that, as well as a meat grill. In all, this is a top spot for those seeking a peaceful break. Spot the stars and the moon at night or set about building a firepit, which are handily permitted on site.

Local attractions

Historians might want to stop by Palmira (an hour and 15 minutes’ drive) to check out the Malagana Treasure tomb or the Phoenix Air Museum’s two-storey hangar. Or you may want to beeline straight for the water… The river at Balneario Rio Bolo Azúl (20 minutes) perhaps? The fresh water of Lagos de Maracaibo (an hour and 25 minutes)? The huge watersports scene at Calima Lake (three hours)? Pradera (40 minutes) and Florida (55 minutes) are some of the closest urban centres, but it’s Cali (an hour and 45 minutes) that takes a lot of the limelight in Valle (and rightly so). Hike up to Cristo Rey (two hours), a Christ statue with views over the city, or get stuck right into the big Colombian city… Tick off a few wild animals at Zoológico de Cali (an hour and 45 minutes) and ogle over Iglesia Ermita. Brush up on your salsa while you’re at it; Juanchito has plenty of salsa clubs.
