  • Quiet riverside spot on a family smallholding in Bryncir
  • Just outside Snowdonia National Park; 10 minutes' drive from the coast
  • Easy access from the A497; pub/restaurant half a mile away
How to sum up Penllystyn Farm? There's a lot to like about this Gwynedd smallholding site, but the three main highlights have got to be the seriously good views, waterside walks and all-round chilled farm vibes. Here you'll be sitting pretty in the small village of Bryncir, just outside Snowdonia National Park and a 10-minute drive from the coast. Around the 10-acre site are a handful of farm animals along with a small woodland area and a riverside picnic spot, where you can also take a paddle or let the dogs cool off with a dip. Picnics, barbecues and campfires are all encouraged around here, but there’s also a good local pub/restaurant half a mile away if you fancy eating out. It should be pretty easy to reach the other amenities in the surrounding area, as the farm is just off the speedy A487 main road. Where that road takes you is totally up to you, but one thing's for sure – you won't feel boxed in here. To the east, you have the myriad walks and adventurous activities of Snowdonia, while those who head north will be rewarded with such spots as Caernarfon Castle and Anglesey. Meanwhile, set your sights on the south or west for days out on the spectacular beaches of the Llŷn Peninsula, treks around the wild Wales Coast Path or sightseeing in the pastel-coloured town of Portmeirion.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Quiet, friendly, good location for snowdonia and portmadog.
Was 5/6 miles from portmadog beach. Facilities were clean. On working farm so lots of animals nearby. Peace and tranquil.

Disliked Only one shower which is mixed, only one toilet for men and only one toilet for female. But very clean. All in same block.

Liked Facilities were maintained regularly and topped up with toilet paper and soap. Facilities were clean. I liked that the field grass was cut to a good length for pitching up tent.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Reasonably priced, harlech beach nearby along with Porthmadog and phwelli. We pitched right next to the sheep field. Kids loved walking along the fence to feed the horse.

Disliked Another shower block needed for busy times

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Lovely site we stayed for 3 nights, Not over crowded, easy to find, a great base for surroundings areas, well keep clean campsite and very relaxed not bothered by the owners but there if you needed them. Very reasonable priced and one of the cheaper sites we have stayed on we will definitely be back

Disliked Not a massive issues but another shower and two more toilets would make a big difference and hot water for washing up.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Quiet family site, liked being able to choose where to pitch. Clean and tidy. Horses, chickens and sheep on site. There is also a little stream running around the field which my daughter enjoyed paddling in.

Stunning weather, sunrise and sunsets.

Disliked Whilst the site wasn’t overcrowded a definite downside was only one male and female toilet and one shower & sink in the little cabin. These were kept extremely clean but you find yourself having to wait to use the facilities.

One washing up sink with no hot water (not really an issue, we boiled water and washed up in the tent)

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked A lovely little campsite, no marked pitches just a small field next to a stream with another smaller field on top of the hill. Perfect for our needs, not too busy. Kids loved going to say hello to the horse, chickens and sheep, the very friendly dog, and going to explore by the stream.
About 35 minutes drive from various Snowdon car parks, and easy access to lovely areas of North Wales.
Fires and BBQs allowed.

Disliked Only 1 shower and 2 toilets but as this is such a small site it wasn’t a problem. Had to wait for the shower a couple of times but not for long and the horse kept us company! It would have been handy to have hot water at the washing up sink but we just got hot water from the sink in the toilet block (adjoining). It would have been good to have a freezer for our ice packs but otherwise no real complaints… I wouldn’t hesitate to come again.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Plenty of space, relaxed atmosphere, lovely bit by the stream.
Handy for onward travel and for Porthmadog to shop.
Value for money.

Disliked No chemical disposal (as mentioned on Pitchup), though owners were helpful when we were stuck. On the same theme, only 1 shower and 2 loos.
As there are no marked out pitches some inconsiderate people do encroach too close to where you are pitched.

Local attractions

If guests in your group are clamouring for castles, send them off to Criccieth (10 minutes' drive), a Cadw-run 13th-century fortress with impressive views over Cardigan Bay. You might also want to call in at Caernarfon Castle (20 minutes) on the southern edge of the Menai Strait, whose mighty walls endured both Owain Glyndwr's sieges and the fiercest fighting of the Civil War. Once you've seen some of the coast, take to the mountains and Snowdonia, where excellent walks are up for grabs at scenic spots like Llanberis (20 minutes) or Beddgelert (20 minutes). Fancy trading in your walking boots for old-fashioned steam train trips? The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway (15 minutes) can sort visitors with whistle-stop tours of the spectacular local landscape. For something a bit more active, Zip World Slate Caverns (35 minutes) should fit the bill with its zipwires, trampolines and underground play park. Older kids in your crew might be more taken by the action-packed activities laid on at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (an hour), including top-rated watersports like freshwater surfing.
