  • Back-to-basics site on the edge of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia)
  • Caernarfon 20 minutes’ drive; Zip World Penrhyn Quarry half an hour
  • Food van on site; access to the Llanberis and Snowdown Ranger paths
Looking for a simple site that can be used as a base camp for summiting Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)? Consider Camping in Llanberis, which sits on the north-western fringes of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). It has direct access to the Llanberis Path and the Snowdon Ranger Path, two routes (of varying difficulties) that lead to the summit of the tallest mountain in Wales. Suited to the outdoorsy type who doesn’t expect any luxury facilities, this is a back-to-basics spot, though there are some amenities, including a toilet block with coin-operated hot showers, a washing-up corner, a fridge, freezer and microwave, and phone-charging plugs. There is also a food van for easy meals after your efforts. The on-site team is happy to hand over some friendly local knowledge and advice. There’s no need to book or find the car parks for Yr Wyddfa here; in addition, the Pen y Pass paths are also easily accessible by car or a Sherpa bus. Camping in Llanberis is just a 10-minute stroll from Llanberis, where there are shops, restaurants, cafés and attractions like the Llanberis Lake Railway. It’s a 25-minute walk to the Snowdon Mountain Railway station for those who don’t want to make the climb to the summit. It’s also a great base camp for those attending running events like Ultra-Trail Snowdonia and the Snowdon Marathon. The Snowdonia Slate Trail, a long-distance path stretching for 83 miles, is a 15-minute drive away.

What customers say

Great spot for Snowdonia hikers! Friendly staff, good value. Basic but useful facilities, including a drying room. Campfires okay. Hilly pitches some found tricky. Showers had mixed reviews on cleanliness/payment. Close to Llanberis village and Snowdon paths.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We liked the location. It was perfectly situated for exploring Snowdon and Llanberis and surrounding area. The views were amazing. It was great having campfires every night. It was lovely having the resident sheep and chickens and cats visit our tent. It was handy having a tumble dryer to dry clothes and there's a fridge, microwave and kettle to use too. There's an adorable kitten that just enters your tent and 2 other young cats who make themselves at home too.

Disliked The site isn't clean or tidy. We stayed almost a week and the rubbish around the car park was there all week and got progressively worse. From a pair of boxer shorts on the tarmac to plastic bottles, food packaging, bin bags, and a full bag of rubbish strewn everywhere by wildlife which the owners didnt sort, it was very sad. The day we left, the car park was a right state. We never saw the owners patrol the site at all, throughout our stay. We also know of several campers who just arrived and pitched for free as no one ever checked the paper tags given upon arrival that you attach to your tent. On departure date we left 2hrs after the time we were supposed to (due to torrential downpours) but no one knew as the owners never ever patrol the site. There is a fridge in the drying room which clearly states that all food needs to be labelled and is regularly disposed of every 2-3 days. When I opened the fridge this morning, 2 flies flew out. It smelt, there were maggots (which I flicked out) and there was a bottle of milk in there over a week old, unlabelled and had gone sour/ full of cottage cheese stuff. Next to the tumble dryer there was an array of dirty items including odd socks etc. The microwave was dirty inside. The toilets sometimes didnt have toilet paper or paper to dry hands and the showers weren't that clean. There wasn't a food van there as advertised either. I got the impression that this was a site that was amazing when first bought but now its just easy money and the owners no longer car for it. If I owned it i would do a litter sweep daily of the carpark and fields. I would also make a point of speaking to all campers I came across which these guys don't. Its very sad.

From the manager: WOW. Flies and maggots in the fridge? that's where you lost all credibility.. Just cleaned the drying room myself this morning before the weekend, yes one fridge smelt of gone off milk that someone didn't bother finishing / discarding but that's as bad as it got. I've seen worse things left in them fridges!

There was about 5 tents on site due to how bad the weather was and forecasted during your stay, it was so quiet that I know exactly who you are (blonde woman with grown daughter) and I can't speak for other staff members but personally - I talked to you twice during your stay that I can remember. So why bother saying we don't engage with customers? Maybe instead of telling me you took my kitten into your tent all night, you probably should have addressed everything you were not satisfied with? We are more than happy to address genuine concerns and problems as soon as possible, instead of reading them in a false, venomous review.

We don't sit at reception all day during very low business periods. That's why we provide self check in details on the reception door (explains why some people didn't have tags - we knew they were here as they had emailed to check in). It's a fairly basic, straightforward campsite, you really don't need staff walking the site around the clock when there's less than 10 people about. During busy periods we are around 8am until 11pm and will always talk to customers that want to engage in conversation!

We don't mind people having an extra couple of hours here after checkout when it's quiet, we're not that strict.

Toilets were checked twice a day, everyday during your stay, morning and night. 'We can't control how others leave the facilities'. Extra loo rolls are left on the windowsills.

We DO patrol the site and know exactly what goes on and who's around - if you don't see or hear from us, it's because you're not causing a nuisance!

The food van is not onsite and not advertised anymore.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We had such a lovely stay at this campsite in Llanberis! It’s a really beautiful spot, peaceful and scenic, with amazing views all around. Check-in was easy and the people working at were genuinely friendly and welcoming.

The bathrooms were always clean, and we never had to wait for a shower, which is such a bonus. There’s also a little room next to reception with a kettle, plugs, and a washer/dryer—super handy to have, especially if you’re camping for a few days.

My boyfriend and I picked a spot at the very top of the campsite, right by the rock wall. It was really private and quiet, which we loved. Just a heads-up: not all of the pitches are flat, so definitely check the ground before you pitch your tent, unless you enjoy rolling around on a slant, haha.

Getting to the top of the site is a bit of a climb, it’s a good walk uphill, especially if you're going back and forth from town. But honestly, it’s a nice little incline and you get to walk past sheep on the way up, which adds to the charm.

It’s only about a 10-minute walk to town and the pubs, which made everything feel super convenient. The whole place had such a relaxed and welcoming vibe. I’d absolutely camp here again and recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful stay close to nature with easy access to town.

Disliked I did try to get in touch with the site before our trip to see if I could switch the dates of our booking, but unfortunately never got a response, despite emailing and calling multiple times. That was a bit frustrating and meant I ended up having to book and pay for new dates. It didn’t ruin the trip by any means, but better communication would’ve been good.
That said, I would still happily camp here again. The views, the vibe, and the overall setup make it a great choice for anyone looking for a relaxing stay in a scenic part of Wales.

Local attractions

If you want to balance your outdoorsy pursuit with a bit of history, head to Caernarfon (20 minutes’ drive), where a fortress built by Edward I in the late 13th century sits where the river Seiont flows into the Menai Strait. Across the Seiont is a large green area with a skatepark and a waterfront path. Lined with independent kiosks, Garth Pier in Bangor (half an hour) stretches halfway across the Menai Strait, making the island of Anglesey seem so close you could almost touch it. There are more views of Anglesey from the Roman Camp, an area of woodland and lawns at the top of a hill overlooking the city. Those who want more thrills besides summiting Yr Wyddfa should visit Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (half an hour), where they can take a vertiginous flight across the lake of a disused quarry on what is said to be the world’s fastest zipwire. If you’re brave enough to keep your eyes open, you might catch a glimpse of the Welsh coastline while you’re in mid-air.
