Pen y Bwlch: Camping field

General

  • Off-grid grass pitches with fabulous views of Snowdonia National Park
  • A 15-minute drive to Caernarfon and Snowdon Mountain Railway
  • Barn with showers, drying area and storage for bikes or kayaks

Pen y Bwlch is in truly spectacular Caernarfon countryside, overlooking mountains and rivers whichever way you turn. Just on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, this is a secluded retreat with lots of space that lends itself equally well to romantic getaways and relaxed family breaks.

Off grid this place most certainly is, but it’s also only a 15-minute drive from Llanberis, at the foot of Snowdon. This is the gateway to walking, cycling and climbing adventures in the national park, and here you can access the Snowdon Mountain Railway, canoe on Llyn Padarn lake or visit the National Slate Museum.

A round up of simple facilities includes an eco-composting toilet near the camping field and a hot shower in the barn a short walk away, where you can also dry your clothes (this is Wales, remember) – and there’s also room to store your bikes and kayaks.

It's worth noting that open fires aren’t permitted in this untamed part of Snowdonia, so firepit-style barbecues aren't allowed. You also can’t park near your tent, but a quad bike and trailer are on hand to help with the lugging of camping gear across to the pitches. And one house rule please: this site is all about relaxing in nature, so please don’t play loud music after 8pm.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

What an amazing experience!! One of the best views of Lake Padarn and Snowdonia I have ever seen and I live on Anglesey! It was perfect for our needs, great to star gaze and relax in very peaceful surroundings. Our host were lovely, very friendly and helpful. The Bell Tent was ample in size for our party of 3, other amenities were very clean and well thought out. Great to have a pitch that came with a bench & seats, Chiminea, BBQ and wood supplies. Thank you so much Pen y Bwlch - we will certainly be looking forward to seeing you next season!

We absolutely loved our stay, the owners were fantastic, really approachable and friendly, and they have an idyllic spot! The moment you walk up to the pitches you get a view of the whole of Snowdon, worth the money alone!

The camp is basic but has everything you would need. The shower is beautifully hot and its great to play table tennis when you're not walking up the mountain.

We will 100% be coming back and can't wait until next year!

A very small site with only two bell tents and a single pitch. Beautiful views (despite the weather) and Johnny and Beth were so helpful and friendly. Facilties are basic but with everything you could reasonably need, including a hot shower, thankfully! The tents are far apart so thankfully my children didn't keep anyone else awake.

Amazing location, breathtaking view even though the whole week was cloudy and wet, it was amazing to be up at the campsite. It is a very quiet with only 2 tent pitches and 2 bell tents. Just 10 minute drive to Llanberis and there are a few public foothpaths are the campsite as well. The hosts are friendly and advised us to go early on Snowdonia which was perfect. Also, the sheep and cat paid us a visit at the tent :)

    Disliked:

The hosts both work full time and decided to quickly do this year and you can tell by the facilities that they were put together rushed and are very basic. The compositing toilet is more of a personal toilet as it is just a bucket. It got full really fast when there were 2 families and us there ( around 12 people) and it was not cleaned often. The shower and toilet cubicle are very tiny, you literally hit your head on the door while trying to wipe your butt. Also, there is no space to stand outsite the shower tray so you get water dripping on you when you are trying to change. They just needed to build them a bit bigger. Bins were not checked everyday and they were overflowing for 2 days.
Even though they helped us take our stuff there with the quadbike they were not available during checkout and it was raining. It would be ideal if they have couple of wheelbarrows as parking is a bit of walk from the campsite. Lastly, need to update their general information as each site does not have own chiminea and barbecue, you have to pay extra for it.

From the manager...

Sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your stay here. It didn't help that it rained every day. As far as our facilities go and as stated on pitch up this is an off grid site. The toilet and hot shower are brand new standard size cubicles which we clean 3 times a day. As far as throwing the site together quickly- we have put lots of thought, love and effort into creating a warm, welcoming and clean environment for our guests to enjoy the natural beauty of Snowdonia. Yes the facilities are basic, but this is what the majority of our guests enjoy as they have stated in their reviews.
Maybe this site just wasn't for you !!!
