Pitch by the river

  • Nearly-wild camping... but with extras
  • Summer bar with games room (at weekends)
  • Free brown trout fishing in the site river
Non-campers who smugly say to you that camping is about roughing it should be pointed towards this site (forcibly, if need be). Glan Ceirw in Denbighshire is ‘nearly wild’ Welsh camping at its very peak (Wales has a lot of peaks) – riverside camping on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, but with some excellent mod cons for all guests. You’ll even be able to cast off for brown trout – free and with no licence required – in Glan Ceirw’s own river; just bring along your fishing equipment. Owners Pauline and Martin see no reason why tent campers shouldn't be treated to some homely treats, so Glan Ceirw counts among its facilities a snug summer bar (open on weekends; drinks only) adjoining a games room with pool table and football table. Glan Ceirw is in a valley location between the towns of Corwen and Betws-y-Coed, with mountain bike trails, cycle routes, peak scaling, forest walking and Bala Lake all nearby. Amenities including toilets, showers and a launderette are maintained to spotless standards, and the grounds are kept immaculate to encourage local wildlife (and small human guests). Glan Ceirw has no food shop on site, but a tasty farmers’ market is nearby where you can pick homemade and organic produce. You could even bring a jar of jam back for the non-camping cynic…

What customers say

Great riverside spot, peaceful, owners are ace! Good value, kids love the games room. Lovely views and bar. Toilets are a bit basic, and some pitches get road noise.

Unpowered grass tent site (six person)

Liked Lovely views, loved being by the stream. Facilities were clean enough.
Owners were friendly.

Disliked The site hosted more tents than there was a space for, it was crammed and most evenings there was no space to park our car. On the website it mentioned that there is a shop and pub onsite but there was no shop and the pub only opened on Saturday afternoon for drinks.
Also dogs were allowed to wonder around on the pitching field and there was dog poo near our pitching space, we had to warn our children to watch out for it before it got picked up by someone later.

Liked Friendly staff

Disliked We arrived at this campsite after a 6 hour drive with our 2 young children. Only to turn around and leave. The lady that greeted us was very friendly however, in our opinion, this site is not set up for camping. The lady came out and requested we pitch our tent very close to another 2 tents, and said we must trail our electric lead in between these 2 tents. This would mean our lead would be constantly walked over and would be plugged in no where near our tent. We do not believe this site meets the 6m fire regulations. The toilets and washing facilities were not to our usual standards. We decided not to stay and left after looking round. This left us in a muddle because we had 2 young children and had to find somewhere else to stay at 7pm, 6 hours from home. We requested a refund as we felt this site was not fit for purpose and was not as advertised. However a refund was refused.

From the manager: An electric refund was given to you within an hour of your message on the same day, although I don’t feel like the refund was due at all since the camping field had half an acre of space for you to pitch wherever you wanted. There would have been no one around you if you chose for that to be the case so the cable safety comments really make no sense at all. Your family wasn’t happy on arrival and there wasn’t much I could have done to cheer you up.
My email to you is pasted below, but unfortunately I can’t share the photo (which shows a very spacious camping field). That day people pitched along the river out of choice next to their own groups and chose to be close together.

Hi [name of guest removed for privacy]

It turns out we have more space and I’m happy to move you to an alternative spot closer to an alternative electric hookup and you will have meters of space between you and others which conforms with all safety regulations and comfort.

The booking policy is advertised on pitch up and is non refundable as I won’t now fill that pitch.

But I’m happy to show you another location and you won’t have to travel back home. I hope that suits.

Just so you see it here’s a photo of all of the space on the camping field and you won’t actually be on the riverside. There’s also a dad with a telescope that he’s letting the children use which will be fun tonight. If you decide to come back I’ll wait around to check you back in late.

Kind regards

Unpowered grass tent site (four person)

Liked Overview: Myself and my two young children, had a fantastic stay at this campsite. It exceeded our expectations, offering a perfect blend of affordability and natural beauty.

Location and Scenery: Chosen for its budget-friendly price and minimal light pollution, the campsite delivered breathtaking night skies. The highlight was stargazing - seeing the Milky Way and clusters like the Beehive with the naked eye was stunning. At home we need a telescope to see these and we brought a telescope but found it unnecessary. Watching the Perseid meteor shower’s remnants added magic to our evenings.

Activities: During the day, the kids loved playing in the stream, where small fish (possibly baby trout) nibbled dead skin from our feet—a unique, spa-like experience! The stream’s gentle sound also made nights incredibly peaceful and therapeutic.

Hospitality: The host was welcoming, greeting us on arrival and checking in to ensure our comfort. Their kindness enhanced our experience.

Overall: This campsite offered an unforgettable escape with natural beauty and tranquility. We’re already planning our return. (Photos to be added once downloaded from the camera.)

Disliked Nothing to dislike for us!

Liked Beautiful location. Ideal for a nice couple of nights away. Short run to Bala which was just what we were looking for. We all enjoyed a little bit of fishing in the river, especially the little ones they had a blast!

Disliked Pitches are on a slight slope but other than that it's a good location

Liked We had the best time. Camping on the edge of the river. It was quiet peaceful and so beautiful.
The children absolutely loved our stay.

Disliked The only thing we could have asked for was a toilet down by the tent area. It was all the way by the main gate. But this did not spoil or hinder our trip.

Local attractions

Bala Lake, Betws-y-Coed, Coed Llandegla Forest and Snowdonia National Park are all nearby, for enough activities of all sorts to keep you busy for weeks. Start off among at the Conwy Valley Railway Museum’s miniature railway at Betws-y-Coed, then take a riverside walk along the Llugwy and on to the spectacular Swallow Falls via the River Conwy; if you don’t fancy the walk, settle down at the picnic areas overlooking the Pont-y-Pair Falls in the centre of the village. Activity centres are within easy driving distance, like the one at Wales’s biggest body of water, Bala Lake, which has a huge range of outdoor options including whitewater rafting, zorbing and canoeing. On land, horse riding, quad biking and dry slope skiing are all available, or you could follow in the footsteps of thousands (millions?) and scale some of the peaks of Snowdonia (promise yourself a picnic and a Glan Ceirw ale at the top). If it’s heritage (and a rest) you’re after, two vintage steam railways are nearby – one at Bala and one at Llangollen – while in the national park the kids can dig into Welsh mining history with trips to Blaenau Ffestiniog’s Llechwedd Slate Cavern and the National Slate Museum.
