Whether it’s castle spotting, hikes along Offa's Dyke or exploring natural beauty spots like the Shropshire Hills and Snowdonia National Park, the Green Dragon Inn will get you right on track. This warm and welcoming pub site in Powys is in the hamlet of Buttington on the river Severn, a few minutes' drive from the English border and it’s a fab place to top up your batteries before you get out… Meals at the rural country pub are sorted by a varied pub menu, with hot food served between 10am and 8pm from Monday to Saturday, and only roast dinners served between 12pm and 5pm on Sundays. Green Dragon Inn has a range of mixed hardstanding and grass pitches to choose from, plus access to a washing-up area, baby changing facilities and a well-maintained bathroom block. This is a dog-friendly site close to lots of riverside and country walks, with visit-worthy local vistas including Admiral Rodney’s Pillar, Whitehouse Nature Reserve and Severn Farm Pond Nature Reserve (all a few minutes' drive from base). The Offa's Dyke trail is a few minutes' walk from the site, running along the river to the north and inland through the fields to the south. Getting to the site should be nicely straightforward as it's just off the A478 – the trade-off for this is that there is a certain amount of road noise on the pitches.

Liked I based my van here for a couple of nights to cycle around the beautiful area. Colette & Jenny are welcoming and friendly and the pub is great with good beer. Campsite is more than adequate with basic facilities that worked for me.

Disliked From other feedback I knew the campsite was close to busy road - i slept with good quality earplugs that worked for me.

Recommend to friends Visit again

Camping pod (adults only, no pets)

Liked Unfortunately there was nothing that we can honestly say that we liked .We were booked in for 2 nights but only stayed for one.

Disliked Everything was scruffy . The showers and toilets were not clean.
This is advertised as ‘Glamping’which is a completely untrue statement.We would never stay again .

Liked Lady working behind the bar was lovely. Some of the other staff were ok but a bit grumpy! Effort was made with a singer in the bar but it was so empty in the pub we felt a little uncomfortable so retreated back to our pitches.

Disliked Whilst we were aware the site was by a road and rail track, the road noise was relentless all night and should be considered if you are a light sleeper.

The site itself seems very run down, and I note the owners are working on improving. I think there are some quick fixes which would give a better overall impression such as tidying up all the areas of stuff in each corner. There was pile of toys etc in one corner of the garden that looked like it was more fit for the bin. Why not make an actual obvious play area if this is oriented around kids?

The facilities were not good. Some had some fresh paint on and you can see some effort is being made to tidy them up. But they were filthy. There is really no excuse for cleanliness being so poor.

Please remove the grate from toilet emptying point! Otherwise it just acts as a filter for anything non liquid!! Not nice.

We are in process of renovating etc and this can be a slow process. We do have a childrens play area with swings etc the toys mentioned are for smaller children who cannot play on the bigger swings.
We will take your other comments into consideration

Liked Pub owners were pleasant enough

Disliked The pitch was very close to a main road which was busy all night. We didn't get a lot of sleep.
There was a lot of discarded things laying around the site. Ie. Broken tables, kids toys.
It all seemed very run down

From the manager: Hi Dawn, we were made aware of the broken picnic table yesterday and have now rectified this, unfortunately things get broken and as its quite a big and busy family site we don't always see these things straight away. the toys are for the children to play with who visit our site as previously stated we are family based campsite so apologies if this upset you. Used as a stopover for visiting Powis Castle.
Charge was reasonable for the night

Disliked Road noise all night as next to busy road.
Pub was not doing food that night which might have been good to know beforehand.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Cheap on Offas Dyke path, clean toilets and shower (only 1)

Disliked On sunny bank holiday weekend the site was crowded, tents far too close together, there should be marked pitches like most sites and we had very noisy group next to us load music and foul language into the early hours. Road noise is also a negative l.

Well, for those of you who have historical sites high up on your holiday to-do list, there are a few places to get started and Powis Castle (10 minutes' drive) is one of the closest out of the lot. This huge Welsh castle has some splendid garden terraces and walks in the grounds are a real treat… For less walking and more chugging about, steam train trips go from the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway Preservation Company (10 minutes). To continue with your historic streak, The Wharf Powysland Museum (10 minutes) spills the beans on Montgomeryshire’s local history, while for ruins, Montgomery Castle (15 minutes) and the Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle (20 minutes) are some of your options. Of course, activities-wise, walking is particularly fine around this area, especially in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes) and Snowdonia National Park (40 minutes) but the kids in your group could cheer on the pig races or meet the alpacas at Park Hall’s adventure farm (25 minutes). Meanwhile, the adults might prefer to go for a laidback game of golf at the Brookland Hall Golf Club (10 minutes).
