Free spirits (or those who need to free their spirits a little…), this is the place for you. As much as possible, guests are given free range at Cwmffrwd Farm Campsite, where pitches are mown into the swaying meadow grasses and surrounded by gorgeous wildflowers. This spectacularly scenic and peaceful Powys site is part of a 22-acre property within the Brecon Beacons National Park, and it’s a place where you really can reconnect with nature. Preserving a sense of wilderness is a key policy for the owners, who keep things on site simple and traditional to protect the natural biodiversity. So, that means no wifi on site but plenty of entertainment in the form of an outdoor library full of books and charts to help you identify the mini beasts you might find while rummaging in the long grass or the birds you spot in the trees. A stream runs down from the mountain through the site, and you’re welcome to have a paddle in there to cool your feet off in the traditional way after the day’s activities. To keep everyone safe on site and minimise the impact on the environment there’s a no-vehicle policy around the pitches – you’ll be asked to park at the field entrance, where wheelbarrows are provided to help you move your kit to your pitch. Vehicles with roof boxes or needing extra large pitches can get access via their own little track to the bottom of the meadows. Facilities on site include three compost loos as well as ‘The Byre’ – a washroom with flushing toilet, shower, washing-up area, freezer and kettle. Talgarth and Crickhowell are both 15 minutes’ drive away for shops and places to eat/drink/pick up takeaways.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Space and privacy. Views. Very chilled and friendly vibe. No phone signal

Disliked: Access to 2nd field was very tight. We were in a LWB van and it was quite tricky to get out the field. Anything bigger would struggle.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Really pleased you enjoyed your stay Andy and looking forward to seeing you again. Yes, access into the fields requires careful driving, which is why we only list pitches for small VW and Transit size vehicles on our van pitches. We're always happy to help if anyone needs assistance with maneuvering, just give us a shout.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: WOW what a setting. We sat for hours in the afternoon/ evening watching the birds of prey circling over the mountain! An unexpected treat for a super value site. Owners were very friendly and met us when we arrived. There was 2 super clean compost loos or the option of a flushing loo, along with washing up area and hot shower. Pitches are really well spaced out.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Everything! Friendly welcome. Designated pitches - very well planned. I had space without feeling alone. The wild meadows between the pitches were lovely. - the access straight on to the hills lead to amazing walks. - The queue for the shower could get long if it was particularly busy - but a shower when 'wild' camping is a bonus anyway. The wash house was a good place to chat with others! I loved it and will definitely recommend it. Felt very safe travelling on my own, and my dog was made to feel very welcome

Disliked: The entrance to the field was quite tight - I was worried I would damage my van - or their wall - but this may just be my driving ability!

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: A gem of a site. Almost magical. Secluded without feeling isolated. Spread out personal pitches amongst wild meadows. Walk from the site straight on to the brecon. Very friendly family. Well signposted. Wild camping with luxuries. Hot water for washing up, a 'normal' toilet and 2 compost ones and even a shower. Me and my dog loved our stay. Not a campsite where they are trying to fit in as many people as possible. Great rates. Genuine hosts.

Disliked: Nothing really just tight getting in and out gate but that maybe more to do with my driving!

Cuckoo bell tent (three person)

Liked: We stayed in the Cuckoo bell tent. It was a delightful weekend. The tent was extremely comfortable, with lots of thoughtful little essentials such as extra thick blankets, hot water bottles and a battery powered lantern all available. The two fixed beds were proper mattresses which made the two adults very comfortable. The tent was situated in a field with other bell tents but they were very spaced out. We paid for some firewood which was handy and had a lovely fire each night in the fire pit. The composting loos were a novelty for us all, very clean and easy to use. The site is hilly and the owner supplied wheelbarrows to transport all our equipment from the car park to the tent which was a great idea. The owners were extremely friendly. The site is about 25 mins from Hay-On-Wye.

Disliked: Its not a big problem at all, but the shower and flushing toilet were in the same 'cubicle' which led to some impatient people waiting to use the loo whilst I was in the shower (trying to be as quick as possible!). There are composting loos available but I guess people didn't want to use them. It would be a minor improvement to have a separate shower cubicle.

Liked: Loved the welcoming feel of the place, very well kept and had everything we needed. The location is stunning and so peaceful. Fantastic compost loos!

Disliked: No WiFi or phone signal, this was not a problem for us as we loved the peace away from screens but just make sure you have maps and directions/info about where you're going next.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: The owners were lovely. Very helpful regarding amenities and things to do in the local area (Crickhowell/) Our view over the hills was stunning with dark skies at night. Great for getting the telescope out or just watching the thousands of stars by the naked eye. Nice lay out of the camp site with plenty of space between pitches. You can even have a a small controlled fire outside your tent. Kindling from owners. The site is remote (which we loved) and bio friendly where ever possible. Nice basic shower/toilet and washing up area in a small quirky barn by the main house. There is a lot to explore on site from open fields to hill walks and even a small hide for watching the birds or other fauna and the stars at night. We stayed in August and the weather was as changeable as anywhere in the UK. We do recommend this site for all ages and people who like to get back to nature.

Disliked: Wonky Bob.....this was an experience. Wonky Bob is larger on the outside then the inside. A little more leg room and the ability to turn round would be appreciated. Wonky Bob, for those who don't know, is a compostable toilet in the middle of two fields if you don't want to walk to the quirky barn. Great idea though. Much more eco friendly.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks so much for taking the time to review Joanne and we're really pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit. Yes, Wonky Bob is the smallest of our compost toilets - he was the first one we built and they develop each time we build a new one - did you get a chance to visit Timmy Ty Bach on the other side of the field or the Lovely Looease? They are much bigger as they are newer and they evolve each time we create one! 😄 Hopefully see you again soon 😊
