  • Quiet Berwickshire farm site with far-reaching views over the Borders
  • Eyemouth 15 minutes’ drive and Floors Castle 35 minutes
  • Well-kept off-grid pitches; hiking, cycling, fishing and golf nearby
You’re guaranteed a warm Scottish welcome at South Watchlaw Farm, a peaceful spot to lay your head just outside the sleepy village of Allanton in the Borders. The site is equidistant between the lively seaside towns of Eyemouth and Berwick-upon-Tweed (both 15 minutes’ drive) and in pole position for forays into Northumberland too. Keen to abandon the car? The railway station at Berwick-upon-Tweed has fast links to Edinburgh and Newcastle, which can both be reached in 40 to 50 minutes. This is a quiet family-run and family-orientated site, so if you’re looking for bright lights and late nights, it’s absolutely not the place for you. Dogs are welcome, and simple facilities on offer include drinking water, elsan and grey waste disposal points, recycling and a basic toilet block (but no showers) at the edge of the camping field – as there’s no power, you’ll need to bring torches for getting around after dark. The well-maintained and neatly mown pitches all have stunning views over the hills and valleys of the Borders, which you can explore on walking and cycling trails right from the site. The local area also has excellent salmon and trout fishing on the Tweed and Whiteadder rivers, and a choice of golf courses within half an hour’s drive. Even better, there’s a dog-friendly pub 15 minutes’ stroll away from the site, and a takeaway in Chirnside (five minutes’ drive).

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Such a lovely little gem of a campsite! The location was perfect , so peaceful and relaxing. It completely exceeded our expectations, especially for the price.

The hosts have really gone above and beyond, and all the little touches made such a difference. The facilities were spotless and so well looked after, which made the stay even better. The whole place just had such a calm, peaceful vibe, and we honestly couldn't have asked for more.

We'd definitely recommend it to anyone and will absolutely be back if we're ever in the area again. Thanks so much for having us!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Lovely quiet site. The site owner was very friendly and helpful. No showers but toilet cabin was lovely and clean (and quite posh for a metal container lol). I loved that kids toys and games were scattered around the site (swingball, giant connect 4, etc). There was also books and games available for use, which was a lovely touch. Very windy the weekend we visited so couldn't use bbq/firepit but these are dotted around the site for use too along with picnic tables. Overall a great site that I would definitely visit again and recommend to others 😊

Liked Lovely owners, nice views, toilets were really clean.

Disliked We left due to wind conditions, completely out of the sites control.
The toilets are unisex so maybe seperate blocks would be nice.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments about the nice views and really clean toilets. We are sorry you had to leave early because of the weather.

However we wanted to address the 6 out of 10 for wi-fi. WE DO NOT OFFER wi-fi and do not advertise or list wi-fi as part of our site facilities.

We encourage our guests to check our clear property details before booking to see what we do and don't have to offer. This will enable guests to decide if it will meet their needs.

Thank you for your comments about the clean toilets and your preference for seperate male and female units.

We do list and advertise our toilet cabin as "unisex." To make things as comfortable as possible, within the cabin there are 2 male and 2 female toilets with clearly marked signs on each door.

We advertise our site as a very small back to basics site with restricted infrastructure however we are pleased you appreciated how clean the toilets were.

We were a little disappointed at the 8 out of 10 for "value for money," as other feedback suggests that £15 for a family of 4 people per night, with clean facilities, was considered good value for money.

We would hope that guests would judge us on what we offer (as clearly advertised) and not on a wish list for things we simply do not have.

Thanks for staying with us and safe future travels.

Local attractions

The Borders is a region justly known for its many castles. The photogenic ruins of Norham Castle (15 minutes’ drive) are free to wander, and offer amazing views over the Borders countryside, while vast Floors Castle (35 minutes) is open for tours of its lavish 18th-century interiors, spectacular formal gardens and wooded parkland. If you turn south, Northumberland has its own share of historic landmarks. Alnwick Castle (50 minutes) offers a poison garden, adventure playground and Harry Potter filming locations. Head to Lindisfarne (35 minutes) to explore its castle and ancient priory, or stroll along the expanse of sandy beach to Bamburgh Castle (40 minutes) atop its rocky crag. To learn about local wildlife, make for Seahouses (45 minutes) and take a boat cruise to the Farne Islands to see the seabird and grey seal colonies. Back in Scotland, there’s another seabird colony on the plunging cliffs at St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve (half an hour). You can sometimes spot seals in the fishing harbour at picture-perfect Eyemouth (15 minutes), where you can also book RIB trips out into the North Sea to see if you can spot dolphins frolicking in the waves.
