The pitches on a sunny day

  • Quiet Berwickshire farm site with far-reaching views over the Borders
  • Eyemouth 15 minutes’ drive and Floors Castle 35 minutes
  • Well-kept off-grid pitches; hiking, cycling, fishing and golf nearby
You’re guaranteed a warm Scottish welcome at South Watchlaw Farm, a peaceful spot to lay your head just outside the sleepy village of Allanton in the Borders. The site is equidistant between the lively seaside towns of Eyemouth and Berwick-upon-Tweed (both 15 minutes’ drive) and in pole position for forays into Northumberland too. Keen to abandon the car? The railway station at Berwick-upon-Tweed has fast links to Edinburgh and Newcastle, which can both be reached in 40 to 50 minutes. This is a quiet family-run and family-orientated site, so if you’re looking for bright lights and late nights, it’s absolutely not the place for you. Dogs are welcome, and simple facilities on offer include drinking water, elsan and grey waste disposal points, recycling and a basic toilet block (but no showers) at the edge of the camping field – as there’s no power, you’ll need to bring torches for getting around after dark. The well-maintained and neatly mown pitches all have stunning views over the hills and valleys of the Borders, which you can explore on walking and cycling trails right from the site. The local area also offers excellent salmon and trout fishing on the Tweed and Whiteadder rivers, and a choice of golf courses within half an hour’s drive. Even better, there’s a dog-friendly pub 15 minutes’ stroll away from the site, and a takeaway in Chirnside (five minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

The Borders is a region justly known for its many castles. The photogenic ruins of Norham Castle (15 minutes’ drive) are free to wander, and offer amazing views over the Borders countryside, while ginormous Floors Castle (35 minutes) is open for tours of its lavish 18th-century interiors, spectacular formal gardens and wooded parkland. If you turn south, Northumberland has its own share of historic landmarks. Alnwick Castle (50 minutes) has a poison garden, kids’ adventure playground and Harry Potter filming locations. Head for Lindisfarne (35 minutes) to explore its castle and the ancient priory, or stroll along the expanse of sandy beach to Bamburgh Castle (40 minutes). To learn about local wildlife, head to Seashouses (45 minutes) and take a boat cruise to the Farne Islands to see the seabird and grey seal colonies. Back in Scotland, there’s another seabird colony on the plunging cliffs at St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve (half an hour). You can sometimes spot seals in the fishing harbour at picture-perfect Eyemouth (15 minutes), where you can also book RIB trips out into the North Sea to (possibly) catch dolphins frolicking in the waves.
