  • Nearly-wild camping field in a rural Lanarkshire location
  • A 40-minute drive from Irvine and Glasgow city centre
  • Part of a working smallholding; close to Loudoun Hill
Looking for almost-wild camping in Lanarkshire? This rural site is part of a working smallholding on the edge of the small village of Drumclog, a convenient location close to the A71. There's plenty of grass and open skies at West Tor, and lots of room for guests to pick their own plot, while a band of woodland provides shelter from the wind and privacy for overnight guests. This site is an easy 40-minute drive from central Glasgow, making a great base for quick escapes to the country or longer stints in the rural Scottish Lowlands. Some of the site owners' organic dairy calves can often be seen grazing in a neighbouring field, while at other times of year there's plenty of nature about to keep you entertained. West Tor has simple facilities like a composting toilet and tap stand on site, meaning that this is a place best suited to self-sustaining travellers who enjoy the chance to build a campfire or cook their own dinner over a barbecue. Outdoor activities like Drumclog Offroad Centre (five minutes' drive) and hiking trails are also within easy reach.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Very peaceful, minimalist camping and fires allowed so I used my wood burning stove l. I knew it was basic with water and composting toilet but that was fine.

Disliked: Although campfires are allowed I wasn’t sure what to do with my charcoal/ ash. I took all my rubbish home but it there was some bins or directions as to where you could dispose of rubbish that would make it better.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Country atmosphere

Disliked: Unmoved small area at top of the hill of a paddock was dry but the rest was a sodden peat - we were crowded in with only 4 tents. There was only a fabric toilet with sawdust to cover waste. Other than 1 tap there is no other amenity. We did not see the host and signage to the site did not exist.

From the manager: Firstly, thank you for your choosing to stay on our site. I'm sorry it was not what you expected, but we very much aim as a semi wild camping site with basic amenities, we do not hide this fact and promote our site on this basis and have had many positive reviews as such. We feel the area is more than adequate for for the very limited numbers we make available, the entire field is free draining sand/gravel soil type and vehicles can drive in here almost any day of the year (not just summer) without trouble, there is absolutely no peat soil in the site. Granted the toilet facilities are only in a pop up style tent and this is in part due to planning limitations and we look to improve these as our site develops. The toilet compost system works because of the dry sawdust. Our contract details are provided when bookings are made and as for not being on site, we feel adds to the semi wild experience of our site. Once again, apologies we did not meet your expectations however none of the issues you raised in your feedback are not clear before a booking is made.

Great little spot. Really enjoyed the stay. I am now best friends…

Disliked: Not big issue, but could do with a wee signpost as we drove right past the site initially.
