  • Peaceful site in a private homeā€™s grounds 15 minsā€™ walk from Braunton
  • A five-minute drive from Saunton Sands beach and 10 from Croyde
  • Well-equipped guest kitchen and lounge area plus a communal firepit
Seek space at Secret Spot Camping, a site on open north Devon farmland 15 minutesā€™ walk from the pubs and shops of Braunton and five minutesā€™ drive from Saunton Sands beach. Pitches here form part of the grounds of a family home ā€“ guests are welcome to wander about and admire the gardens (a lot of effort goes into tending them, as youā€™ll see from the pics). Clubs and groups are welcome but be aware that the vibe here is very much peaceful rather than party. Facilities on site are centred around the convivial campersā€™ shelter, a hub full of handy things including a kitchen (with a fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster), comfy sofas, sockets for charging gadgets, and a wifi connection. If itā€™s a fine day, thereā€™s also plenty of outdoor seating scattered around the place and a communal firepit area for campfire chats. Barbecues are welcome too, as long as theyā€™re kept on the bricks provided. With several famed beaches nearby (not just Saunton Sands but also Croyde, 10 minutesā€™ drive away, and Putsborough within 15 minutes) this is a tiptop location for surfers as well as those who want to chill out; the site owners also manage a surf shop in Croyde, so folk who donā€™t have their own kit might want to hire or buy down there (with a little discount to aid proceedings).

Liked: Unspoilt natural vibe. Beautiful gardens to chill in. Thoughtful facilities such as a campers kitchen and fridges/freezers. Friendly site owners. Lots of useful signage and information.

Disliked: Would love a place to hang wetsuits such as a line or undercover drying space.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Steve and Jo are fantastic hosts, nothing was too much trouble. Great facilities, with the added bonus of a communal kitchen. Beautiful and quiet location, walking distance (either along the main road or through the fields at the back of the site) to Braunton. Flat walk/cycle (45/20 mins) to a car park, then 30 min easy walk to the Saunton beach. Pretty communal garden to explore. We will definitely be back!

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: We recently returned from a 10 night stay at this quiet, secluded spot set in beautifully kept grounds with a laid-back vibe and surrounded by nature. Steve and Jo the owners were very friendly and helpful in a non-intrusive way, affording us full privacy, lots of space yet help close to hand if needed. The campersā€™ kitchen and facilities were clean and so well thought out, with more complementary extras than weā€™ve found on any other sites. An absolute gem of a campsite set in a stunning area of North Devon with an overwhelming abundance of diverse nature right outside your tent. Weā€™re already planning our return visit. Thank you so much for a wonderful holiday Steve and Jo!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike, this site ticks all the boxes.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Clean, friendly, well thought out site with all the amenities you need. Quiet site in a great location. Steve the owner couldnā€™t do enough for you and was always on hand to help. The communal area was superb, well kitted out and never before had we been offered the free use of kettles, toaster, fridges, hot water bottles etc great option, will definitely return.

Disliked: Having to use the dog field with our small dog when the adult only site looked superb! Unfortunately we had a noisy family with kids & dog next to us.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Very unfortunate that with only 4 tents in the whole field (one whole acre of land btw) that you were unlucky enough to get inconsiderate neighbours. If you had mentioned it to me i could have had a word with them. I certainly did not hear any noise myself. This was our first full year of taking camping dogs (as you know, we have two dogs of our own). We trialled it end of last year with no problems. We have much more room now we no longer have horses so we thought we could use the extra space to make it work. However, if people are unhappy being away from the busier "Family" field and feeling segregated then reverting to our 'No Dogs' policy might be the best option. - The 'dog' field is in no way remote and is actually nearer to The Campers Shelter/Kitchen and Firepit Area than the Family Field! We do thank you for your feedback which will make it easier making decisions for the future. - Regards Steve

Local attractions

For a break from the waves, have a think about walks on the South West Coast Path (within five minutesā€™ drive) or bike rides on the Tarka Trail (15 minutes away). Wanders are also to be had around the Braunton Burrows sand dunes, the largest system of its kind in England and around 10 minutes' drive from the park. Tour tunnels instead at Ilfracombe ā€“ thereā€™s a network of four carved out of the cliffside by locals back in the 1820s ā€“ followed by seawater swims in the nearby tidal pool. This seaside settlement 15 minutesā€™ drive from Secret Spot Camping also has an aquarium to amble around and is a gateway for wildlife-spotting boat trips. Kids keen to gaze at yet more animals? Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park (25 minutes' drive) is the place to go for meets and greets with meerkats and sea lions as well as animatronic prehistoric creatures.
