  • Dog-friendly rural Devon site near several sandy beaches
  • A half-hour drive to Barnstaple and 25 minutes to Woolacombe
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; footpaths and pubs nearby
Head to this north Devon site to pick your own spacious pitch across 12 acres of land with spectacular views over Exmoor, within 30 minutes’ drive of Barnstaple and 25 minutes of Woolacombe. This is a working farm, so you’ll share views of North Devon’s cliff-carved coastline with a host of farm animals, as well as the occasional wild pony, red deer or bird of prey. Near to sandy coves, woodlands and open moorlands, you'll quite possibly be ooh-ing and ahh-ing all day long. Plus, your dog won’t need to miss out on the countryside sensations either, as they’re welcome on a lead. Pick a plot among the unmarked pitches stretching over 10 acres of land and come prepped with grill recipes because barbecues are allowed on site. There are firepits provided to keep blazes safe and bins to keep the countryside litter-free. Toilets, showers and drinking water facilities are on site, too. Other perks of staying here include a pets corner where you can get your fluffy fix feeding the alpacas or watching the sheep and alpacas doing their thing and a picnic area where you can break up your day with a tasty packed lunch admiring the scenery. You may want to keep an eye out for cheeky peacocks and other wandering wildlife as you follow one of several trails direct from the site suited to bicycles or feet. There's a circular route past beaches, or if sand’s on your mind and you want it fast, it’s a 15-minute drive to the nearest sandy coves and surf schools. After all that walking, you won’t want to go hungry either… it’s easy to grab a takeaway here or fill up at several pubs, restaurants and shops in the neighbouring towns, including a Victorian inn within a five-minute drive of the site.

What customers say

Spectacular clifftop views of the Bristol Channel. Super clean facilities, great space to pick your own spot, perfect for coastal walks. Can be windy, and extra loos/showers needed when busy.

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked Spacious pitches, the clean and spacious toilets with small details of care like loads of toilet roll to hand and little mirrors (for us girlies), a big washing up area with hot water including sponges and washing up liquid. The showers were fantastic, some of the best I’ve used with space to hand stuff and put on a shelf to make things easier. Hardly no phone signal but quite enjoyed the no access for a more relaxing time.

Loved how you could also rent a fire pit and buy logs&kindling. We had our own fire pit but was so handy to buy more logs!

This is a very Dog friendly campsite with nearby coastal walks❤️

The sunset from this campsite is some of the most beautiful I’ve seen. I loved staying here and I’m already looking at rebooking!

Disliked Nothing at all!

Liked Super scenic site, we went on the bank holiday and it was not overcrowded at all! Amazing views. The toilet/shower/washing up facilities were brilliant, and easy access to the coastal path, also option to hire a fire pit for £20 was great!

Disliked No dislikes at all just be mindful if you are with a dog and its hot there arent many shaded spots :)

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked The facilities were simple but spotless and the views were amazing. You can leave at any time on your last day, which was very handy.

Disliked Internet connection was only available near the main facilities.
The location is excellent for walkers and coastal path explorers, but it’s not easily walkable to the nearest town, so a car is essential unless you’re a very keen walker.

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked You could choose your own pitch, and there was so much space which meant that everyone could spread out. Friendly alpacas. Plenty of toilets and showers, which were immaculately clean for our entire stay. Lovely washing up area with washing up liquid and sponges provided incase you forget them. Campsite is in a beautiful area with stunning views and loads of good walks.

Local attractions

Getting your seaside fix isn’t hard from South Dean Camping. Combe Martin (five minutes’ drive) is a very scenic spot, and all that scenery is extra special when you’re on a rented kayak or paddleboard just off shore. The village is home to the Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (10 minutes) too, a zoo and prehistoric park for just as an attractive day out. More coastal spots include the surfing hotspot at Woolacombe Beach (25 minutes), Ilfracombe’s busy harbour (20 minutes) or the Valley of Rocks (20 minutes) for all things coastal walks and dramatic sea views. For a little of the historic, settle in for the funicular railway in the villages of Lynton and Lynmouth (20 minutes) or potter around the country house and gardens at Arlington Court (15 minutes). Barnstaple (30 minutes), a gorgeous riverside town, is the go-to place for Tarka Trail bike rides. If it’s a walk you’d rather, Dunkery & Horner Wood National Nature Reserve (40 minutes) has a great loop among the ancient oaks.
