Ever been to one of those parks which have been run by the same family for generations and those who have been welcoming guests for decades? If not, it's time you did… such as to Pensagillas Park, near Cornwall’s St Austell, which has been run by the Kent family for six generations to provide a pristine place for pitching up. Pensagillas has had guests staying here since 1970; it’s all looked after and laid out to be tidy and attractive, with trees, hedging, shrubs and a tarmac roadway connecting the grass meadows. The pitches are in a five-acre field at the end of a private drive, with Cornish countryside views all around. And bring your rod: there’s an old mill with stream on site for contemplative casting off (and/or picnics), along with a two and a half acre coarse fishing lake at the bottom of a steep hill to land roach, tench, golden rudd and carp of up to 28lb (note that fishing is for an additional fee, paid for at reception). Pensagillas Park is a working farm, and you can buy the site's own free-range pork, sausages, chops and eggs in the on-site shop. During high season, there’s a takeaway and a cosy bar serving beer and cider, with more tipples and food available in the local village a couple of miles away.

  • The bar and take away are open 23 to 31 May and 1 July to 31 August. For food there is no eat-in, only take away. The fishing lake is located at the bottom of a steep hill, accessible only on foot.

Pond Meadow powered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked We had the pond view, it was amazing!!! We also booked an electric pitch, which also came with a water tap.

There was a small shower and toilet block, separate from the main block which was a bit of a walk away.

The camping pitches were large, and it didn’t feel like you were on top of one another.

The toilet area was also kept clean regularly! There were plenty of utilities, including a washer, dryer and freezer for ice packs!!

Wifi is available!

Disliked The shop closes at around 5, which meant we weren’t able to buy any firewood on our first night. Also the way to the bar isn’t well sign posted, so we got a bit lost lol.

Liked The campsite was great, all staff friendly. I called as I had an unexpected emergency to move it a week sooner and Dave was very happy to help and moved it a week sooner. We arrived a little later than expected but everything was good, Dave was even happy to allow me to check in an extra day! When we arrived everything was lovely and very family friendly, I asked Dave if we could stay an extra week and he was happy to help and made sure we could. The shop on site was very well stocked and the facilities was very clean. Over all we loved the whole 2 weeks that we was there! I have a child with additional needs and nothing was an issue at all! Thank you to Dave and the team for a very good stay for me and my family.

Liked This is the best kept campsite I’ve been in. Toilet blocks are so clean and nice . Cute little bar. We would have tried the food had we been there longer . WiFi signal is amazing ! Great feel about this place . I don’t think they could do anything to improve this place themselves .

Disliked Downside - getting there . The roads are so tight and narrow . We had a job in our motorhome 7.5 M by 2.7M . It’s a single lane road at the end and our camper was touching the sides of both hedges . Really needs to be one way. It was very hairy at times and I think we would have gotten stuck had we meet another motorhome / caravan . Passing places were poor and lots of reversing uphill to try and let cars past.

Liked Friendly welcome, good access, site well laid out and "private" pitches edged with hedging and little gates to paths. Facilities were spotless, nice little shop for the basics. Vending machine for sweets, laundry, phone charging, tidy waste facilities. Nice little bar, and takeaway - best chips ever lol. Wi-Fi pretty good for a remote location - only the occasional buffer.
Picked this site for the little fishing lake for a couple of days R&R. Perfect.

Local attractions

Pensagillas Park has tourist information on site if you’re stuck for info on what to do, but any problem you're likely to have will be trying to narrow your list down… Pensagillas is near busy St Austell and one of the closest parks to one of Cornwall’s biggest attractions, the mighty Lost Gardens of Heligan a mile and a half away. Leave the car behind and reach Heligan by the Pentewan Valley Trail, which links St Austell to the gardens and to Pentewan via a scenic valley; you can hire bikes on the trail or take to the water at Pentewan, which has a fine beach and two sailing clubs with boats for hire (there’s also a St Austell Ales pub here for real ale adorers). Mountain bikers and the energetic should beetle towards the bike routes of Bodmin Moor, taking a pitstop at Jamaica Inn, an almost essential stop in these parts. The inn, the setting of Daphne du Maurier’s smuggling novel of the same name, has a museum telling the tales of Cornish smugglers throughout the centuries, and apparently several ghosts too…
