Setting off for strolls in the South Downs National Park is splendidly easy from Newhouse Farm Wild Camping. This quiet and off-grid wild camping site is part of the Goodwood Estate, and it has footpaths running directly from the farm to the South Downs Way and other parts of the network of trails that run through this scenic part of the world. The farm makes a lovely place for a peaceful rural break in the West Sussex countryside, with pitches spread around the perimeter of a large field that’s got plenty of space in the middle for chilling out or playing games. There are gorgeous views of national park landscapes all around, and clusters of trees on site give a home to local wildlife. It’s a wild camping setup here, but you’ll have access to toilets (although please note no showers or hot water). Dogs and kids are welcome, and campfires and barbecues are permitted to help you cook and keep warm by night. And you may well need that warmth, as you’re likely to want to stay out as long as possible enjoying the starry displays in this International Dark Sky Reserve. The main Goodwood festival site is 15 minutes’ drive away, so this is a handy place to stay if you’re heading to an event there. Closer to home is the village of East Dean, just under two miles away, which has a good foodie pub.

A peaceful, remote spot with stunning views & great walking access. Rachel's a fab host! Spacious pitches, clean portaloos. Basic facilities are fine for a back-to-basics escape with campfires & dark skies. Bumpy track & patchy signal are minor. Highly recommended.

Liked It is a very quiet and peaceful camp with plenty of room and beautiful views. At night the sky is spectacular and clear - perfect for star gazing!! Rachel was very helpful with brilliant communication. The Star and Garter down the road was very very nice and offered a 10% discount on food for camp patrons.

Disliked The road leading to the field is very bumpy and stoney.

Liked We absolutely loved our stay here. Bank holiday weekend of perfect weather and there was loads of space, peace and quiet and chilled vibes. The main noise at night was from owls. No big groups. Mainly couples and families with kids. Could not be better. We will definitely be back!

Liked Loved that you can just pitch up anywhere available around the site and super relaxed camping - we pre ordered a fire pit and chilled under the stars!

Liked We loved Newhouse Farm Wild Camping, great set up, portaloos were so clean. Rachel was so friendly and helpful, gave us all the info we needed for the site. Really cool campsite! Definitely visit the Star and Garter pub too, which is in the village, easy to walk to from the campsite.

Liked Peaceful, not too busy and plenty of room. Even though portaloos they were clean and well stocked with toilet roll and hand sanitiser. Great offering the wood and fire pits too!

Disliked The road up to the campsite is very bumpy and tricky if you need to pass other cars

Liked The large pitches in a beautiful valley surrounded by forest walks, fantastic dark skies for star gazing and fire pit rental makes for a great retreat experience from a busy life. Rachel who runs the site is fabulous, always cheerful and helpful . As a single female camper, this was much appreciated. Loos are basic, but very well maintained.

Disliked Mobile signal is random, but actually makes you turn off your phone and enjoy the beauty around you!

Chichester (25 minutes) is another cultural hotspot with a Gothic-era cathedral and events at the acclaimed Festival Theatre. Equally unmissable is the verdant West Dean Gardens (15 minutes), with its fabulous display of informal plantings, pretty waterside walks and Victorian glasshouses. There’s a stellar collection of Old Master paintings and ornate suites of rooms filled with priceless treasures at National Trust-owned Petworth House and Park, or you can step further back in time at Fishbourne Roman Palace (both 25 minutes) to see decorative mosaics in a life-size mock-up of an ancient Roman villa. If the kids want their day at the beach, choose between the sand-and-shingle expanse backed by cafés and amusement arcades at Bognor Regis or walk the dogs along the quiet sands at West Wittering (40 minutes).
