  • Quiet West Sussex site near the village of East Dean
  • Goodwood Estate events 15 minutes’ drive; Chichester 25 minutes
  • In the South Downs National Park, with access to South Downs Way
Setting off for strolls in the South Downs National Park is splendidly easy from Newhouse Farm Wild Camping. This quiet and off-grid wild camping site is part of the Goodwood Estate, and it has footpaths running directly from the farm to the South Downs Way and other parts of the network of trails that run through this scenic part of the world. The farm makes a lovely place for a peaceful rural break in the West Sussex countryside, with pitches spread around the perimeter of a large field that’s got plenty of space in the middle for chilling out or playing games. There are gorgeous views of national park landscapes all around, and clusters of trees on site give a home to local wildlife. It’s a wild camping setup here, but you’ll have access to toilets (although please note no showers or hot water). Dogs and kids are welcome, and campfires and barbecues are permitted to help you cook and keep warm by night. And you may well need that warmth, as you’re likely to want to stay out as long as possible enjoying the starry displays in this International Dark Sky Reserve. The main Goodwood festival site is 15 minutes’ drive away, so this is a handy place to stay if you’re heading to an event there. Closer to home is the village of East Dean, just under two miles away, which has a good foodie pub.

What customers say

This campsite provides a peaceful, remote "wild camping" experience in a gorgeous rural setting. Reviewers highlight Rachel, the friendly host, spacious pitches, and clean portaloos. Despite basic facilities and a bumpy access track, guests love the tranquil atmosphere, campfires, and stargazing. Recommended for a back-to-basics escape.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Everything you could ask for from a WILD camping site, I can’t express wild enough, there is not a drop of road noise, light pollution or anything you would generally get in a normal camp site, beautifully clean porta-loo’s with hand basin, no showers yet but planned for 2026 to broaden the horizons for people trying to dip their toes in the wild camping life without losing all of your usual amenities. That being said, in my view being that this is a wild camping site, having loo’s is enough of a step above the rest. Running water on site immensely helpful. I cannot stress enough how well put together this site is.

Rachel the owner could not be more helpful, she came for a wonder around site to make sure everyone was happy and that there was nothing that could be done to improve your stay.

Don’t think twice, if you want a night of beautifully starry skies, absolute silence only broken by the hoot of an howl or the cheep of a bat, this is the place to go.

I would advise a 4x4 as the best route of access however smaller cars such as a VW up where able to get on site, just be prepared incase it rains, the site is up hill partially.

Signal is also very sparse, so get your head out of your phone ;)

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Fantastic location

Disliked The road leading up to the site is not maintained (sorry to say) so it’s a bit bumpy to say the least. This site due to recent rainfall was tricky to access in my motorhome. But to be fair I would come back in the summer.

From the manager: Dear Mark,

Thank you so much for your kind review. It was a pleasure having you stay with us at the farm.

Our track is maintained and was improved last winter. We added two passing places, levelled the track to reduce potholes, and laid chalk at the entrance to the field gate. That said, you’re absolutely right that it is still very bumpy. Please be reassured that we’re committed to further improvements over this winter, with plans for additional and larger passing places as well as a more solid track surface and a surface at the top of the hill to assist access after persistent bad weather.

I really appreciate your feedback, and we look forward to welcoming you back again next summer.

With best wishes,
Rachel

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Lovely field right on the edge of the forest, with a fantastic view over the hills. Great spot to catch the sun setting.
Toilets on site cleaned regularly and Rachel is easily contactable for wood/fire pits etc. We started our stay on a Sunday and it was busy, but not intrusive, by the Tuesday (after bank hol) there were about 3 other campers in the field, it was so quiet. We will definitely return.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked It is a very quiet and peaceful camp with plenty of room and beautiful views. At night the sky is spectacular and clear - perfect for star gazing!! Rachel was very helpful with brilliant communication. The Star and Garter down the road was very very nice and offered a 10% discount on food for camp patrons.

Disliked The road leading to the field is very bumpy and stoney.

Local attractions

A stay at Newhouse Farm puts you in pole position for the numerous festivals at Goodwood Estate, but the campsite is just as close to the fascinating Weald and Downland Living Museum (both 10 minutes’ drive), with its carefully restored historic farmhouses and half-timbered cottages. Chichester (25 minutes) is another cultural hotspot with a Gothic-era cathedral and events at the acclaimed Festival Theatre. Equally unmissable is the verdant West Dean Gardens (15 minutes), with its fabulous display of informal plantings, pretty waterside walks and Victorian glasshouses. There’s a stellar collection of Old Master paintings and ornate suites of rooms filled with priceless treasures at National Trust-owned Petworth House and Park, or you can step further back in time at Fishbourne Roman Palace (both 25 minutes) to see decorative mosaics in a life-size mock-up of an ancient Roman villa. If the kids want their day at the beach, choose between the sand-and-shingle expanse backed by cafés and amusement arcades at Bognor Regis or walk the dogs along the quiet sands at West Wittering (40 minutes).
