Pitches

General

  • Family-friendly site 10 minutes’ walk from a sandy beach
  • Within a half-hour drive of Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze
  • Pool, miniature golf, indoor play, bar and clubhouse entertainment

You can’t (sadly) guarantee good weather for your UK hols, but you can certainly give yourself some decent odds by escaping to the area known as the Essex Sunshine Coast – (so called because records show it to be one of the driest corners of the country).

Should the sun indeed put in an appearance, you’ll be in prime position to make the most of it at Dovercourt Holiday Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the town of Harwich. From here it’s a quiet 10-minute stroll along a footpath to the nearest sandy stretch (or a five-minute drive to the town beach if you’re carrying a whole pile of clobber). Beach seekers can tick off several more sandy stretches easily enough too – Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze are among the other resorts reached with a half-hour drive.

Even if the days are damp there’s plenty to do back at base, where the clever owners have installed an amusement arcade, all-weather sports court and an indoor adventure playground with ball pit. A miniature golf course is on site for fine days, as is an outdoor swimming pool (for those who’ve declared the sea a tad chilly for proper swims).

Evenings on site can be whiled away taking in the family entertainment over eats and drinks in the clubhouse. If the sunny weather’s inspired you to bring out the barbecue, that’s fine too – pick up essentials in the small on-site shop or hit the supermarket aisles in Harwich.

Great for getting to Harwich in morning, good sized pitch, water on pitch and waste water disposal. Had fish and chip shop and bar restaurant. Near to sea if we had looked for the path.

    Disliked:

Where grass had been cut and strimmed, loads of shredded litter. When I asked about toilet empty point, I was told the machine has broken so put it down the toilet, as there would be no hose pipe etc worrying to think you are using a toilet that could have had a toilet emptied down, children would not be aware of looking for signs. I'm sure this was a one off.

Passes were included. Pitch size was nice as we had an end pitch. Location close to beach and shops.

    Disliked:

The toilet and shower block was disgusting. The waste disposal didn't work so everyone just had to use a man hole which was right next to our pitch. Bins which were also right next to our pitch were constantly overflowing and smelt. Our pitch was covered in cigarette butts. Swimming pool was dirty and also surrounded in cigarette butts.

Right next to the beach, lots for the kids to do, neatly kept pitches

    Disliked:

Could do with a play area near the pitches, there were a few dotted around the site but unfortunately not one for the children staying in the camping area.
Also the arcade was quite disappointing... more toys in the 2p machines!

    Going home

    Disliked:

Toilets, Dirty, lights on a timer that didn't last long enough to use the toilet. Shower on a percussion tap that lasted exactly 8 seconds. I had to press that a lot to get a shower.
Shower water barely warm enough and I was probably the first person to use it whilst I was there.
Launderette: Went to use it but you had to buy a card for £2, register it online, then top it up before you could start. Went to the launderette in Dovercourt instead.
Dog cost £2 extra and then she wasn't allowed in the bar so had to walk 1.25 miles to town.
General feeling that they weren't interested in the tourers.

Local attractions

Heading into Harwich? Hang around to roam around Redoubt Fort (a circular seaside lookout built in the early 19th century and still with some of its original cannons), check out life below deck on Lightvessel LV18 or take in a film in one of the UK’s oldest cinemas.

If it’s traditional entertainment you’re after, both Walton-on-the-Naze (25 minutes’ drive) and Clacton-on-Sea (half an hour) have proper pleasure piers along with their beaches (and fish and chips to have on the sands). Set up way earlier than either is Colchester (35 minutes), the oldest recorded town in Britain and now home to both Roman ruins and a Norman castle (plus a zoo and trampoline park if the history stuff doesn’t grab you).

To see some of the area’s native species, head to Hamford Water National Nature Reserve (35 minutes) or the Essex Wildlife Trust’s bird and butterfly sanctuary Fingringhoe Wick (45 minutes). A fab collection of farm animals and a wildlife park are at Jimmy’s Farm (35 minutes). If you’ve more of an eye for aesthetic pleasures, make a beeline for Beth Chatto Gardens (25 minutes) or Flatford (half an hour), the National Trust site that inspired many a painting for John Constable.

Must see

  • Christchurch Mansion (16.6 kilometres)
  • Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon Burial Mounds (19.8 kilometres)
  • firstsite (24.7 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Flatford: Bridge Cottage (16.9 kilometres)
  • Sutton Hoo (19.7 kilometres)
