Dovercourt Holiday Park: Water hookup point

General

  • Family-friendly site 10 minutes’ walk from a sandy beach
  • Within a half-hour drive of Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze
  • Pool, miniature golf, indoor play, bar and clubhouse entertainment

You can’t (sadly) guarantee good weather for your UK hols, but you can certainly give yourself some decent odds by escaping to the area known as the Essex Sunshine Coast – (so called because records show it to be one of the driest corners of the country).

Should the sun indeed put in an appearance, you’ll be in prime position to make the most of it at Dovercourt Holiday Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the town of Harwich. From here it’s a quiet 10-minute stroll along a footpath to the nearest sandy stretch (or a five-minute drive to the town beach if you’re carrying a whole pile of clobber). Beach seekers can tick off several more sandy stretches easily enough too – Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze are among the other resorts reached with a half-hour drive.

Even if the days are damp there’s plenty to do back at base, where the clever owners have installed an amusement arcade, all-weather sports court and an indoor adventure playground with ball pit. A miniature golf course is on site for fine days, as is an outdoor swimming pool (for those who’ve declared the sea a tad chilly for proper swims).

Evenings on site can be whiled away taking in the family entertainment over eats and drinks in the clubhouse. If the sunny weather’s inspired you to bring out the barbecue, that’s fine too – pick up essentials in the small on-site shop or hit the supermarket aisles in Harwich.

Nice quiet clean site, currently ripping out the outdoor pool for an indoor one (none of this affected our stay even though the mailed to let us know it was going on up front) The walk from Dovercourt to Harwich and back was most enjoyable with the dogs. Plenty to see and do.

Will definitely be back in the new year.

    Disliked:

If I have to dislike something toilet/shower block nice and clean but a bit dated. Didn't stop me using them and regularly cleaned.

nice big clean and tidy site with nice large pitches, close to beach, staff were friendly in the entertainment area, enjoyed the bingo which was not too expensive, a nice area to walk the dog,ok site for a few days nice and quiet until the weekend come then got noisy, would consider again

    Disliked:

the water taps were not designed for the normal hosepipe connections, there was only one place to empty and clean the toilet waste and that was a machine you had to pay £2 for, there were only 2 showers in the block which was ok for this time of year but could cause problems in high season

camping pod was new, relatively spacious and clean. Reception staff were really helpful on arrival.

    Disliked:

parking directly outside the pod is not ideal and the immediate surroundings whilst tidy are more car park than field, but not an issue as in line with expectations.

Main disappointment was quality of food on offer in the bar/entertainment space - a lot of room for improvement

    The pod was excellent quality.
The clubhouse was lovely and the entertainment was enjoyable for all ages.
The food was tasty and reasonably priced.
The scenery and areas surrounding the campsite were lovely. Right on the beach front.

    Disliked:

The pod could do with some homely touches. Like a kettle, cups, tea, sugar and coffee. Maybe a little fridge.
And the toilets, decent enough, but could do with new seats and loo holders as a few were cracked and broken.

Pod was modern and clean. Fairly quiet location. Cheap and cheerful fish & chips on site.

    Disliked:

Shared bathroom was not sufficiently cleaned during the entire stay (this should be particularly important during a pandemic).
We did not receive a call in advance regarding the need to book all activities (lady at reception looked guilty when mentioning).
    Not much to do nearby.
WiFi didn’t work for us at all.

Directions

Local attractions

Heading into Harwich? Hang around to roam around Redoubt Fort (a circular seaside lookout built in the early 19th century and still with some of its original cannons), check out life below deck on Lightvessel LV18 or take in a film in one of the UK’s oldest cinemas.

If it’s traditional entertainment you’re after, both Walton-on-the-Naze (25 minutes’ drive) and Clacton-on-Sea (half an hour) have proper pleasure piers along with their beaches (and fish and chips to have on the sands). Set up way earlier than either is Colchester (35 minutes), the oldest recorded town in Britain and now home to both Roman ruins and a Norman castle (plus a zoo and trampoline park if the history stuff doesn’t grab you).

To see some of the area’s native species, head to Hamford Water National Nature Reserve (35 minutes) or the Essex Wildlife Trust’s bird and butterfly sanctuary Fingringhoe Wick (45 minutes). A fab collection of farm animals and a wildlife park are at Jimmy’s Farm (35 minutes). If you’ve more of an eye for aesthetic pleasures, make a beeline for Beth Chatto Gardens (25 minutes) or Flatford (half an hour), the National Trust site that inspired many a painting for John Constable.

Must see

  • Christchurch Mansion (16.6 kilometres)
  • Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon Burial Mounds (19.8 kilometres)
  • firstsite (24.7 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Flatford: Bridge Cottage (16.9 kilometres)
  • Sutton Hoo (19.7 kilometres)
