  • Small campsite with direct access to the Ullswater Way walking path
  • A 10-minute walk from Pooley Bridge, past the Ullswater Steamer Pier
  • Just 500 metres from the lake; short walk from bars, cafés and shops
How’s this for the first morning of your Lake District trip? Rolling out of the tent to lake views, before strolling 10 minutes into the village for coffee and breakfast and then backtracking five minutes to take up a spot on a historic Ullswater steamer. Such routines are commonplace at Waterfoot Carpark Campsite… This small, simple campsite is in a field around 500 metres from the shore of Ullswater, with views over the lake, so there’s always something to satisfy the eyes. As for satisfying the stomach, it’s just outside of Pooley Bridge, meaning that restaurants, bars, cafés and shops are only 10 minutes’ walk away too. The Ullswater Steamer Pier is just five minutes’ walk away from the pitches, so you’re in pole position for getting to other spots around the lake without so much as touching your car’s steering wheel. If you have Cumbria hikes high on your priority list, you’re also in for a treat. The site has direct access to the 20-mile Ullswater Way, a round trip around the lake. From Pooley Bridge, you can also follow the Lowther Castle Loop and Dalemain Loop.

What customers say

Great spot for Ullswater, handy for Pooley Bridge. Lovely lake views, friendly owners, good value. Clean portaloos, but limited showers & TP sometimes. Can be noisy, some pitches slope.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Waterfoot car park campsite is a campsite next to a main road and car park at the northern part of Ullswater. There are 5 portaloos and large bins.

Disliked It has a steep incline which can make pitching up and sitting/sleeping difficult. The grass was also very long, which made driving and walking around the site difficult and slippy. Before arriving at the site, I had 4 missed calls in quick succession at around 3pm from the owner asking when I was coming to the site. I explained we were out hiking so would get there between 7 and 8pm. He then rang again at 7pm (I'm not sure why) and we turned up at 7:30pm approximately. When I pulled up, there was a tent "check in" area on the left. The owner walked to the car and immediately appeared disgruntled and slightly intimidating. He asked if we had a booking and when I explained we'd booked through Pitchup he challenged us. I explained he'd called us multiple times earlier that day and he then told us we'd have to pay the outstanding charge with cash. Unfortunately, I had to offer bank transfer as I didn't realise the site was cash only. This was my mistake. He then told us we can find a pitch and park anywhere we like. The campsite was very busy and noisy, and tents were packed very close together. I drove to a less busy area towards the top of the field and parked up. This was on a steep incline and the grass was very long and wet. The owner drove at speed in a 4x4 truck up to us with his headlights on and shouted out of his window that we couldn't park there, and then told us to park in the busier area. He sat in his car watching me reverse hill-start (poorly) out of my parking position and move somewhere busier. If it wasn't for feeling intimidated and being told to park "anywhere" before re-direction, this little pop-up site would be quite a nice place to stop off, especially if enjoying Pooley Bridge nearby. The campsite rules state both the following "dogs allowed all year" and "dogs not allowed". For anyone with a dog, I'd recommend checking first.

From the manager: the pitch airea that you chose was not to b pitch on as everone that went to that area had been asked to stay low down as field wasnt suitable to go to high therefore were asked to move down but with the car he stay by to make sure didnt get stuck being full everyone is asked if booked on for your info dogs are allowed its the same when it comes to paying balance we are told it dose not say cash but if read properly it clearly says cash

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Gorgeous area with stunning views, short walk to local village and access to the water

Disliked When we arrived we asked if we could pitch anywhere and was told yes, we found a stop to then be told 5 mins later we were too high up. Portaloos wasn’t cleaned while we were there which meant they started to smell really bad especially coz it was warm weather.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: the portaloos are cleaned and stocked regularly with loo roll but some people think its there right to make as much mess and take the said loo rolls as they wish which we replace the loos dont get emptied every day but do get emtied when needed but to say about being asked to move from trying to pitch a tent up a slop then camping is not for you

Local attractions

Get your hiking boots at the ready, as there are plenty of walks to get stuck into from your pitch. The Ullswater steamers can drop you off in Glenridding (otherwise 15 minutes’ drive) for a quick loop up Lanty’s Tarn, which has views of Helvellyn, England’s third-highest mountain. You could also get off the boat in Howtown (15 minutes), where there's a walk to Hallin Fell overlooking Ullswater. If you’d rather tackle Helvellyn (20 minutes), it's not far away either. Aira Force Waterfall (10 minutes) is another splendid place for a good stroll – this waterfall with a 65-foot drop was a favourite spot for William Wordsworth. If you fancy breaking up all that walking with a cycle, you can hire bikes at Lowther Castle & Gardens (20 minutes). The estate trails make for an easy ride, and if you’re visiting with kids, there’s also a handy adventure playground. Stop by in Penrith (20 minutes) if you have time too. It has a 14th-century castle and a museum, and it's close to a lovely walk up Beacon Hill.
