  • Dog-friendly site on the River Worth, with access to the Pennine Way
  • In Brontë country, two miles from Haworth’s Brontë Parsonage Museum
  • Excellent walks to Hebden Bridge; a five-minute walk to a pub
Always up for a good long walk or a getaway in an area packed with literary history? If your answer is yes – to both or either question – get your bags packed and make your way to Ponden Mill in West Yorkshire. The Pennine Way, a long-distance national trail, crosses near the mill, and there’s also access to excellent walks to Hebden Bridge or further away. This site is also part of the area known as Brontë country, so you’ll be surrounded by the landscapes that inspired the Brontë sisters’ classics. To explore those literary connections, you could start by strolling the two miles to the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth (five minutes’ drive), although there are many more Brontë sites in the area – including the inspiration for ‘Wuthering Heights’ on the hill facing the mill. On site, you’ll be staying at a grassy woodland area alongside the River Worth. All pitches are generous in size, with most of them placed on flat, well-drained ground. There are excellent views too, as the site sits underneath Scar Top Chapel. Within 100 metres of the pitches, the main facilities include toilets, showers and a washing-up area. Dogs are also welcome. A pub is a five-minute walk away, and there are grocery stores in Haworth.

What customers say

Lovely riverside spot for walkers/nature fans. Friendly hosts, beautiful scenery, great value. Facilities are basic but clean, though some say they need updating (hot water, loos). Midges can be an issue by the river.

Power optional concrete and grass motorhome site

Liked Good access to the site if you approach from the Ponden Mill signage. Ignore sat nav instructions if it takes you across the reservoir. The road on that approach is full of deep potholes. The site is lovely, snuggled below the reservoir and very peaceful.
Facilities include toilets, shower, elsan disposal and sink for washing up. Drinking water tap by facilities and also midpoint on site.
Warm welcome from the host who personally directed me to where I could rest my van and left me in peace for the remainder of my stay… thankyou.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Really beautiful little site. We had a fantastic 4 night stay here in our tent enjoying the lovely stream, shady trees and views across the fields. Surprised how quiet it was for the time of year with only a few other campers and camper vans. Toilets and shower room always clean and plenty of hot water in the shower and at washing up station. Very close to Haworth and Keighley. Will definitely return and maybe even stay in the Lotus bell tent as a treat!

Unpowered grass tent site (solo, no cars)

Liked Great clean facilities (shower, toilets, seating area)
Lovely views.
Sheep bleeding nearby.
Spacious and not too busy on a Sunday evening.
Good value for one person with a small tent and easy to book and arrive and set up.

Disliked Unfortunately, one of the other guests put on a radio and tacky awful music quite loud for several hours until around 10:30 in the evening. So I had to endure drifting off to sleep to those aggravating sounds rather than the calm peaceful Brontë Moors whispering and distant sheep and bird conversations…. that spoiled things somewhat for me, but I assume they made their stay more pleasant. Neighbours!

Maybe a sign could be put up at the site saying keep music on low volume and stop playing it by some reasonable time such as 9:30 pm?

Liked Lovely site with lovely owners. Its a small site next to a stream. We took our children with us and they really enjoyed playing in the stream. They do have WiFi at the house. There is no signal otherwise. Lovely peaceful site though with lovely views. We had food out at a local pub so it is close enough to howarth to go eat and explore. We also saw a lovely white barn owl, lots of sheep and some hedgehogs at night. Bring your binoculars if you come and stay.

Disliked I would say the shower does need updating and more shelving in there to put your clothes and bags. Toliets need more lighting.

Power optional concrete and grass motorhome site

Liked Nice quiet peaceful location. Previous reviews not really fair from what I've seen. Don't expect amazing facilities, but the were clean and serviceable. Nearest pub shut but straight out the gate follow signs right over bridge for millennium walk to next village, 2 pubs, kids park and easy bus to Howarth

Disliked Nearest pub closed down

Liked We really loved it at Ponden - beautiful surroundings, kind owners, and one of the loveliest walks we've ever done (a walk from the campsite up to Ponden Kirk and back around to meet the reservoir). Watch out for the midges in the evening - you're by a small stream so they're inevitable in the summer.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked The vibe, atmosphere and personality of this site shine through in every little corner. There must be a lot of love for this place by the admirably friendly people who run this site. Facilities are clean and the owners think about where its best for you to pitch creating pockets of privacy on a relatively small site. There are little secret spots in the paths winding down which feel like a fairytale and feed curiosity. There is enough to explore in the surrounding villages. We recommend taking the steam train. Great footpath and walking area’s nearby.

Disliked There is only one shower on site so I guess it will ask of guests to time their showers and as there wasn’t a table or baby change we had to get a little bit creative getting our 10 month old baby dressed but… an under bed storage box did do a great job for a bath and the lid with a towel on worked as a changing mat on the floor. But really there isn’t anything to dislike, just some things that would make life a tiny bit easier.

Local attractions

Climb aboard the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (10 minutes’ drive) at Haworth station, and travel south to Oxenhope or north to Keighley. The line and the surrounding area provide the background to several scenes in the 1970s film ‘The Railway Children’, and grown-ups might be overcome with nostalgia during the ride. In Keighley (20 minutes), Cliffe Castle was built as the home of a wealthy Victorian textile manufacturer. It is now a museum full of furniture, art and decorative objects, plus displays of fossils, taxidermy and vintage toys. The gardens include several water features, an aviary and a playground. On the outskirts of the market town of Hebden Bridge (20 minutes) is Hardcastle Crags, a National Trust nature site with dog-friendly woodland walks. Assorted ponds, streams and waterfalls are home to frogs and other aquatic beasties, while woodpeckers and curlews are just two of the resident bird species.
