  • Family-friendly site in peaceful rural South Yorkshire
  • A 15-minute drive from Yorkshire Wildlife Park; watersports nearby
  • Barbecues permitted on site; pub and shops just a short walk way
It’s all rather peaceful out in the South Yorkshire countryside, where Mooreacres resides. This dog-friendly site has a splendid rural setting in Hatfield Woodhouse, and activities around here are along the lines of gorgeous walks and birdwatching in nature reserves or kayaking, paddleboarding and open-water swimming at Hatfield Outdoor Activity Centre 35 minutes’ walk away. If that doesn’t sound just splendid already, the centre of the local village is only around half an hour’s walk away. That means that pubs and takeaways are never too far off. Of course, another, rather attractive option is to rustle together your own barbecue (which are handily permitted on site). There are shops in the village for sourcing cuts of meat, buns and other essential ingredients. For those of you who adore a day spent with your fishing rod and family or friends, the village also has several fishing lakes, all within walking distance of the site. The lakes at Hatfield Moors Nature Reserve are just a little further out (just five minutes’ drive, to be exact) and a scenic place for spying on birdlife, including nightjars. When you fancy a drink or a bite to eat and you want it quickly, the closest pub is just 15 minutes’ walk away (they run a carvery and stone-fired pizza for the foodies among you). Plenty of attractions are easy to access too, including the Yorkshire Wildlife Park (15 minutes) and Boston Park Farm (five minutes). Mooreacres has simple facilities. Perhaps most conveniently, these include a modern toilet facility, modern shower room and water points. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on leads around the site.

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked Lovely check in, great campsite. Really well kept and great facilities.

Disliked Minor thing but I found it confusing how to wash dishes. There wasn’t a water safe outlet nearby to I ended up carrying a bit of water from the water supply over to the washing up area. Again a very minor point, not a deterrent!

Liked A lovely quiet caravan/campsite with spacious pitches, clean toilet/shower blocks. There are a couple of goats and ponies there to stroke. Excellent value for money, will remember for the future.

Daisy camping pod (no pets)

Liked Lovely site with good green area to play. The pod was well-equipped. Sleeping arrangements let this one down massively

Disliked The fouton is not a double bed!! My daughter ended up sleeping in it and me on the floor!! No way could 4 adults be in the pod for sleeping with current arrangements.

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked Site was an ongoing project with potential and pitches were level with their own water supply. We stayed one night as a stop-off on our journey home from further away and it suited our purpose. Great pub nearby!

Disliked Just came from 2 weeks at a really large, spacious site which emphasised how close the pitches here are next to and behind you, depending on which pitch you had.

Local attractions

How to kick off your holiday in South Yorkshire? A day out in Doncaster (20 minutes’ drive) to begin with, perhaps? Though it may look small on your maps, Doncaster has plenty of historical sites, including the Doncaster Minster, a Victorian shopping centre, a museum and art gallery and Cusworth Hall Museum & Park (half an hour). The latter has acres of parkland for you to explore, as well as the exhibits inside the historic Grade I-listed building itself. Add a zoo day into the mix with a visit to Messingham Zoo (half an hour), where there are mammals and birds just chilling out. The Brockadale Nature Reserve (half an hour) has more wildlife, this time in a valley habitat that includes around 40 species of birds. If you’re keen to keep on with checking out the local historical sites, Conisbrough Castle (half an hour) is an excellent choice. The novelist Sir Walter Scott was inspired by this place, and it’s easy to see why – the ruins are pretty impressive, but you'll be the judge of that too.
