  • Well-kept, peaceful Yorkshire park five minutes’ drive from Whitby
  • Robin Hood’s Bay five minutes’ drive and Scarborough half an hour
  • Restaurant and bar on site, plus a play area and dedicated dog park
Set in 10 acres of stunning North Yorkshire moors and countryside, York House Caravan Park is just five minutes’ drive away from Whitby – not that you’ll need much reminding, as the Gothic abbey is visible from parts of the site. This spacious site in the small village of Hawsker appeals to both couples and families – and it must be doing something right, as guests often come back year after year. There are two play areas for kids, and also plenty of opportunities for gentle strolls and relaxing in the peaceful surroundings. It’s a canine-friendly place too, with a dedicated dog-walking field. From the site, there’s easy access to the Cinder Track, a 21-mile path along the disused railway from Whitby to Scarborough. Leaving the car behind on your adventures? There's a good bus service from Hawsker to Scarborough in one direction and Middlesbrough in the other. On-site facilities include a well-maintained shower block, a washing-up and laundry room, and – saving the best news for last – a café, bar and restaurant (opening days and times vary depending upon the season; there are reduced hours in low season) for those days when you just don’t feel like catering for yourselves. There’s also a local pub five minutes’ walk away, which serves tasty home-cooked food and a good selection of drinks.

What customers say

Great location for exploring Whitby/Robin Hood's Bay on foot, bike or bus. Spacious, level pitches, clean facilities, super-friendly staff. Cafe/bar and local pubs a bonus. Some found pitches small and electricity an extra cost.

Power optional grass tent site (large)

Liked There was a lovely view in areas of the park and close proximity to Whitby and nice walks.

Disliked The uneven pitch for us to pitch our tent up. The shower and toilet area was only closed for cleaning once a day and it used by multiple people. Bar/ cafe closed at 5pm and would have been better during the holidays for it to stay open later

Power optional gravel caravan site

Liked In a good location, kids enjoyed park. Bar area was nice and staff were friendly.

Disliked Toilets/shower blocks were disappointing. As soon as you open the ladies toilet door you’re smacked in the face with the smell of urine (dread to think what the men’s smell like).
No hand soap at the sinks for the entire time we were there, we arrived at 3pm (toilet blocks are closed between 11am/12 for cleaning) and left at 10:30 the next morning.
I didn’t look in the showers, but the floor in the toilets were swimming with water from the shower cubicles.

Grassed area wasn’t well maintained, looked untidy everywhere.
Couldn’t pick any WiFi up anywhere.
Cafe is only open Friday/Saturday and bar closed at 5pm, shame when weather was lovely and had loads of people sat outside!

I think it’s steep for £40 a night.

Power optional gravel caravan site

Liked The idea of a bar / restaurant on site and it not being a big site

Disliked Reception not open once in our entire stay . Kept missing the bar being open as there wasn’t enough information given on arrival. Our main issue was the dirty toilets no hand soap and the women’s loos smelled like a urinal. I tried to complain but went two times to do so and neither reception nor the bar were open. On our second to last night the bar was open and as soon as we arrived we were notified our daughter was not allowed in after 9pm . Not politely either. Rather abrupt . On arrival the lady I dealt with was polite and advised me she could not take an Apple Pay payment for the remaining £40 I needed to pay for our stay.its not her fault but it’s a poor system, we were blocking the entrance with our caravan a good ten minutes and other people were arriving and could not go anywhere. Can I just add we were not the only ones complaining about how dirty the toilets were

Liked There was a cafe and little shop on site.
Toilets and showers were good too.
Nice large pitches

Disliked During the heatwave would have been nice that the showers could be cold instead of just hot.
WiFi didn’t really reach our pitch.

Local attractions

York House Caravan Park is nicely located on the eastern edge of the North York Moors National Park. It's a short drive from here to Robin Hood’s Bay (five minutes’ drive), where ghost walks tell the story of times gone by. For a small taste of the village's smugglers' history, head to the museum. For hikers, there are fine choices around such as the 109-mile Cleveland Way (five minutes) through the North York Moors, and the Coast to Coast Path (five minutes) ending at Robin Hood’s Bay. Those who prefer to travel at higher speeds can take the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from the station in Whitby (10 minutes) – after spending some time exploring the famed abbey, of course. Goathland (20 minutes) is a popular destination – it's the home of the TV series 'Heartbeat' and starred in the Harry Potter films too. There are so, so, so many pretty spots along the coast that you might find it hard to choose where to spend your time. However, Ravenscar (20 minutes), a pretty coastal village with splendid cliffs, and the more ‘happening’ Scarborough (half an hour) are some very nice picks.
