Walking route at middleham moor
The slightly sloping camping field

  • Pop-up Yorkshire Dales site with stunning views across Wensleydale
  • Middleham Castle, Bolton Castle and Aysgarth Falls 15 minutes’ drive
  • Pubs about 20 minutes’ walk; shops and restaurants 10 minutes’ drive
Well, this is quite some setting. Penhill Park is a pop-up nearly wild site with superb views over the hills and vales of Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. There is an abundance of rural beauty to explore from the neatly mown camping field, and conveniently the shops, supermarkets and restaurants of Leyburn are an easy 10 minutes’ drive away. Set on the edge of a 100-acre working farm, this family-friendly site is at the foot of Penhill hiking area and also adjacent to Middleham Moor, where you can watch racehorses from the local yards exercise on the gallops every morning. Dogs are welcome to accompany you on your meanders (there are two pubs about 20 minutes’ walk away too), but must be kept on a lead while on site as livestock grazes the surrounding fields. This peaceful spot is equipped with eco-toilets and a shower shack, a washing-up area and recycling amenities. The owners operate a ‘leave nothing behind but footprints’ policy, so be sure to take all your waste home with you. Depending on weather conditions, firepits are generally allowed, but please don’t use disposable barbecues or light campfires on the ground.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Fantastic views, lovely clean composting toilets and hot water at handwashing sink - a real luxury! As was the hot shower including mirror - fabulous! Recycling was straightforward, with one bin for all recyclables and one for waste.

Really lovely shelter area set up with a basket of wooden games - large dominos, jenga and one we know as 'smite' (a skittles type game). We had great fun playing that! This was a really lovely and thoughtful fun and playful touch.

We happened to meet the owners and mentioned an issue with the shower head not being very adjustable and it was replaced later the same day with a new fixing allowing full adjustability by height and angle - brilliant fast response to issue raised.

Disliked Nothing! May help other users to know that there is a recommendation that water be boiled before drinking (we hadn't brought a stove this time!), but as it was spring water we did drink it anyway and found it fine. There also is no soap provided for handwashing (though hand sanitiser is provided).

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Amazing tranquil site! Perfect for beautiful walks. Lovely clean compost toilets, and fab shower shack. If you are looking for peace and quiet with stunning views this is ideal! One night we had the field to ourselves. Lovely little touches like garden games, and very eco friendly.

Disliked Absolutely nothing! Could not fault this site and will definitely be returning.
