Rural setting

  • Simple family-friendly site with eco values and countryside views
  • A 25-minute drive from Stratford-upon-Avon
  • A short walk or drive from pubs and shops
Pining for a family-friendly break that includes ample time for rural relaxing, but also the chance to get to grips with Shakespeare’s hometown? In a countryside setting 25 minutes’ drive away from Stratford-upon-Avon, Aylesmore Farm Campsite is exactly the spot to escape the rush and come and listen to the birdsong for a few days… Family-run and family-friendly, the emphasis here is upon being low impact on the local area. This means that the facilities have been kept simple, with just composting toilets and basic cold water washing-up facilities (and don’t expect the grass to be cut short either). All rubbish must be taken home, as there are no bins. The eco site has spectacular views over the surrounding farmland, so you may want to take in the views over a barbecue. There is one firepit on site too (no open fires are permitted). Shipston-on-Stour, the local market town 10 minutes’ drive from the site, also has plenty of pubs and restaurants for all different tastebuds – and it’s fondly known as ‘the gateway to the Cotswolds’. The site is also within walking distance of pubs, a village shop, a bakery and a butcher's. The owners also highly recommend heading to Whichford, 10 minutes' drive away, where there's a café well known for having one of the nicest brunches in the shire. It's right next to a lovely pottery centre for a post-brunch wander. When you’re not making new friends with the other guests or exploring the local countryside, make your way to Stratford-upon-Avon. Here you can take a ghost or Shakespeare tour, visit Shakespeare’s own haunts, catch a theatre show or row a boat down the river Avon.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: The location is beautiful. The sure is rustic but lots of cosy home touches woven in - clearly with lots of thought and care, with a toy chest for little ones and little trucks, to firepit and benches dotted about. It's very tranquil and rural and a total escape from it all. The team are very helpful and accommodating too. I will definitely be returning.

Disliked: It was just what I was looking for. A small detail, a sign or some key marker at the entrance would help.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: The location was stunning. It's on a working farm, on a hillside. I was lucky with the weather and had a stunning sunset in the evening overlooking the Cotswold hills.

It's a fairly local site to me, and only used it to test my new tailgate tent setup before some bigger trips but I will definitely be returning to this site!

The host, Sarah was extremely helpful, providing really useful information via WhatsApp and kept me well informed during my stay.

Disliked: Nothing.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: This is as close to wild camping as you can get but still have the basic facilities. The views are amazing even if the weather isn't great and it is so peaceful. There aren't many places you can go these days where you don't have any background vehicle noise but this is one of them!

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: We just spent a night here on our way back up from Dover to the north of England, after two weeks driving through the Pyrenees and France.

The location was perfect for us, peaceful, and the views from the campsite were stunning.

Sarah, the owner, was lovely and communicated well with us before our arrival. She was even on site when we arrived, making sure the facilities were clean.

You can choose your own pitch, and there were plenty of fire pits and benches scattered around.

We had run out of gas in our van, so we walked about 30 minutes to the local pub, The George, which served nice food and had a welcoming atmosphere.

We’ll definitely stop off here again in the future.

Liked: Absolutely beautiful site, just magic how they’ve set this one up ☺️
Clean, well cared for, simple but very thoughtful play area for the kids, and spectacular views.

It was really peaceful, natural and there was loads of lovely little touches from the owners, who were incredibly helpful during our stay. Worth a detour!

Local attractions

After visiting Sezincote House & Garden, you might be ready to compose your own sonnet declaring your fondness of the Mogul Indian palace (25 minutes’ drive). It’s one of a handful of gorgeous historical sites a short drive away from the site… A grand day out indeed can be had at the Jacobean country house of Chastleton House (25 minutes) or the arts and crafts garden of Hidcote (25 minutes). Nab a spot on a guided tour around Broughton Castle (20 minutes) too, a fortified manor house with a moat and Great Hall. The Rollright Stones (15 minutes), made from the Jurassic oolitic limestone of the Cotswolds, have been around since the Bronze age and Neolithic period. That’s one last historic site before you return to the present, perhaps with a visit to the All Things Wild (half an hour) zoo or Fairytale Farm’s playgrounds, petting zoo and fairytale-themed gardens (20 minutes). As for a peaceful stroll indeed with nothing to distract you but gorgeous flowers from all corners of the world, get that at the 56-acre Batsford Arboretum and Garden Centre (25 minutes).
