  • Well-maintained, peaceful site behind a pub in Long Itchington
  • Warwick Castle and British Motor Museum within 25 minutes' drive
  • Traditional pub with open fire, beer garden and visiting food vans
If you’re a fan of a good pint of proper beer, you may well have come across the name Long Itchington before – this pretty Warwickshire village has no fewer than six pubs selling good-quality real ales, with three of them getting a mention in the Good Beer Guide. One of those pubs is The Green Man, a lovely traditional pub that’s got a large quiet and flat camping field behind it – just the spot for a little rural break with countryside walks by day and a survey of local hostelries by night. The surrounding area is a good one for walkers, who can head out for rambles along a disused railway line, or stroll along the banks of the Grand Union Canal. And there are plenty more options for days out too – perhaps to Warwick Castle, the British Motor Museum or Royal Leamington Spa (which can be reached on a bus from just outside the pub). Wherever you choose to roam, you’ll be coming back to a well-maintained and peaceful site where you’ll have access to pub toilets (but please note there are no showers or electric hookups). And of course you’ll be wanting a drink… which can be consumed inside by the open fire or out in the beer garden in sunnier weather. The pub doesn’t do food, but a fish and chip van (said to be ‘legendary’) stops by on Friday nights at about 8pm and you’re welcome to eat your meal at the pub. Otherwise, see what’s on offer at one of the other locals, or stop by at the small supermarket two minutes’ walk away and pick up supplies to get your barbecue going.

Liked: First impressions were good and the gentleman who showed us to our space was lovely.

Disliked: Unfortunately our stay took a fast downwards turn and I'll try to summarise as succinctly as possible.

We are a sensible, quiet, mixed racial family group with young children, and had pre agreed that we could have additional guests join us for a bbq. Upon our guests' arrival a female member of staff came out - I presumed she was the owner - and was incredibly rude to us. She said that we had not been authorised to have additional guests joining us, and that they were a campsite in a residential area and we could not 'have a party' (we were having a quiet, music free and alcohol free bbq).

When I politely pointed out that we had pre agreed for our guests to be there she told me that this was not the case (essentially calling me a liar). She told me that she would check which member of staff had agreed this and then come back to speak with me. Safe to say she never returned to continue the discussion.

Following on from this, the pub had incredibly loud music blasting from both inside and outside the pub until 1.30am, despite signs around the campsite saying that their 'quiet time' was from midnight onwards.

In the morning we had several instances of the same lady making loud comments about us, and talking to other people (members of staff or campers - we were unsure), as well as staring at us repeatedly whilst she was outside in the pub carpark.

Throughout the entirety of our stay we noticed a distinctly different treatment of the other group of campers, which was interesting to witness.

I personally felt incredibly uncomfortable, unwelcome and frankly at times unsafe at this campsite. We were at all times polite, considerate and respectful and we treated appallingly by the owner. We will not be returning and would recommend other campers to seek an alternative venue.

Liked: Two exceptionally clean, side by side, toilets/shower wet rooms which are open 24/7. Showers are free. Water was always hot when I had to wash.
The field was really well maintained and was pretty flat.
5 pubs within a 20 minute walking distance. The Green Man has excellent beer and has decent prices. My personal faves were The Two Boats Inn and the Cuttle Inn which were either side of the canal. Some really nice walks around here.
Long Itchington is a lovely well kept village and is very peaceful. If you want things a bit busier Southam is only 2 miles away so only half hour or so walk away. More shops, cafes and 4 pubs. There is a bus from Southam which stops right next to the Green Man.

Disliked: Pot wash sink outside the toilet block was cold water only but that isn`t a major problem.
The pub being closed on Monday (although there are plenty of other pubs to choose from !)
Being charged a fiver for the dog.

Local attractions

Working up a thirst for your evening drink shouldn’t be too tricky – especially if you’d like to do a good long walk or bike ride. The Grand Union Canal runs through the village, with a towpath running along the bank for walkers/cyclists. The Burton Dassett Hills (15 minutes’ drive) make another good spot to head for, or you could try Draycote Water (15 minutes) for fishing and watersports as well as walks or bike rides. Warwick Castle (25 minutes) is a must-see for those who’ve not been before; Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park (20 minutes), Charlecote House (25 minutes) and Upton House and Garden (25 minutes) make good alternatives for a change of scene. There are plenty of options around for damp-day activities too, including outings to the British Motor Museum (20 minutes), Coventry Transport Museum (25 minutes) and Coventry Music Museum (25 minutes).
