  • Dog-friendly farm-style site on the edge of the Peak District
  • A 20-minute drive from Buxton and 25 minutes from Alton Towers
  • Walking distance from watersports and pubs; walking trails nearby
Pining to get away to the pretty Peak District? From Camping at The Hollies, a farm-style site on the edge of the national park, you’ll be able to put your best foot forward and get to walking or biking through valleys, woods and caverns… or mix it up with a meander in some of the park's characterful towns such as Buxton, 20 minutes’ drive away, and Bakewell, half an hour's drive away. The backdrop here is The Roaches – just one of the good spots for hiking in the area. There are more walks accessible right from the site or a short car ride away. While you’re exploring, you may want to pay a visit to Tittesworth Reservoir, just 15 minutes’ walk away down the road and a proper watersports haven. Pubs are also on hand to keep up the merry time, including a couple within walking distance. In Hartington, 20 minutes’ drive away, there are village shops, cafés and tea rooms for a coffee and a cake (or two, depending on how far you’ve walked). Leek (five minutes’ drive) or Rudyard (15 minutes) are other local spots with shops, restaurants and pubs. On site, a few sheep and chickens roam around. Plus, a resident pizza van called Pipers Pizzas sells delicious stonebaked pizzas (done in a woodfired oven and very much liked by many guests) every Friday and Saturday from 4pm and on bank holiday Sundays from 4pm. There are basic facilities – on-site toilets (proper ones, not portable-style) are provided, and there are four showers (bring coins for the meters if you want to use these). Firepits are available to hire, but they require a cash-only deposit, and you'll only be allowed to burn wood purchased on site. To make sure everyone gets a good night's sleep, quiet hours are set between 10pm and 7am.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked The location was perfect. We chose somewhere close to home as testing out new equipment. Pub with great food on the doorstep. The freedom to pitch where we wanted on the camping field. Clean toilets, well stocked with loo paper. Showers which had good pressure and no tiresome push button. £1 for 5 mins, which was plenty of time.

Disliked Not really an issue as we were prepared having read the reviews but no hot water available at the pot wash. Had to boil own water on pitch to wash pots.

Really friendly staff, good size pitches and well kept.

Liked Everyone was respectful and adhered to the 22:00 no noise.
Hiring the fire pit was really useful.
It was nice to pick our own spot and it didn't feel like everyone was on top of each other.
We picked a good weekend to stay with the weather.

Disliked My only dislike was we had decided to have Pizza from the onsite pizza place on Saturday night but they ran out of dough at 19:00.

The view, location, super friendly staff and a great pizza van. Stayed…

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Scenery was lovely.

Disliked We counted 200 plus people for 4 toilets,
As a result of this the toilets were not clean,
shower ratio to people was not enough,
A food van was 2 meters next to toilets.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Spacious site, lots of areas to choose from. Great location, lovely walk round the reservoir too, dog friendly. Pizza van on site

Disliked Not the sites fault, large group next to us with loud music all day and the same song at least 15 times over.

Great site with food van with reasonable prices for tasty food!

Liked Freedom to choose where you want to pitch. Renting of firepit was easy and everyone we spoke to was friendly

Disliked Could’ve done with some more showers and toilets - although we did stay on a Saturday night and the site was very busy in particular!

Overall a good relaxed site with lots of local walks etc

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Freedom,
toilets
Quietness

Disliked Dogs
No security
No point of contact if any emergency
Showers
Overpriced breakfast

From the manager: Hi matthew, thanks for your review, we really appreciate them. I just wanted to add there was security on this weekend, we usually do it ourselves but we hired a company in, he was definitely here because we saw him ourselves both nights. Also my number is on the confirmation booking. It's on the large sign at the entrance and also Google. I'm always available, we live on site so if there ever was an emergency I'm very contactable.

A relaxed site with basic facilities in a great location

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Relaxed arrival and being able to choose your own place to pitch
Great location with stunning views and sunsets
Good pubs within easy walking distance
Great walks nearby - easy access to Hen Cloud and The Roaches, we will be back to walk to Luds Church
Pizza van offers really good food
Toilets and showers are few and basic but this is reflected in the pitch price - although a busy weekend there were never long queues and always well stocked with soap and loo roll. Showers were adequate for £1.
Fellow campers respected the 10 pm noise curfew even on a busy June weekend in a heatwave.

Disliked Although the food that the pizza van serves is great, its location is far from good. It cannot be considered hygienic to have it so close to toilets which only have a single door - there is a reason why food hygiene regulations stipulate that toilets must not open directly onto food preperation areas! It is not nice ordering and waiting for food immediately outside toilets, and it can't be nice for the food vendor to have to work in this area.
I know that the food van needs to be near a water supply but you do have another washing up sink nearer to the entrance - perhaps you could consider creating an area there with some hardstanding? I am sure that a more attractive and visible pitch would be beneficial to all parties.

Local attractions

In such a scenic setting, you may well spend a lot of your time outdoors … there’s a valley trail and Thor’s Cave in Manifold Valley (20 minutes’ drive) and cavern tours and woodland walks around Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park (15 minutes). Skip over the stepping stones at Park Dovedale & the White Peak (half an hour) or do the loop around Dovedale (half an hour), another top beauty spot. Rudyard Lake (20 minutes) is heavy on adventure too, with an activity centre, steam railway, cycle paths and boat trips. If you’re particularly daring, Madrenaline Activities (10 minutes) runs outdoor activities such as segways, axe throwing and archery. Alton Towers (25 minutes) has many more adrenaline thrills. Family-friendly attractions are all around, including Peak Wildlife Park (15 minutes) and the ice cream farm at Blaze Farm & The Potty Sheep (20 minutes). If it’s a peaceful place you’re after, Bakewell (half an hour) and Matlock (45 minutes) both fit the bill. The former has Bakewell puddings and a medieval bridge and the latter is a historic spa town. Biddulph Grange Garden (20 minutes), a National Trust landscaped Victorian garden, is just as peaceful.
