  • Lakeside park in a wildlife haven on five acres of grassland
  • Dog friendly with woodland walks; hot tub to hire
  • A few minutes' walk from a nature reserve with fishing pools
Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you. Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and guests can bring their own barbecues. And for keeping toasty after that, a Nordic wood-fired hot tub overlooking the lily pond is available to hire in the afternoons and evenings for four-hour periods (couples only). Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

Adults-only spot by Colemere lake. Spacious pitches, great facilities (incl. lounge). Peaceful, abundant wildlife, direct access to walks. Dave & Ingrid are super friendly & helpful. Patchy phone signal but highly recommended for its tranquil, scenic setting.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Facilities were clean and the site was quiet with a communal area which was used each time I passed by.

Disliked The facilities are quite limited, with very little room to manoeuvre when getting in and out of the showers. There are only two female showers, two female toilets, and one additional mixed shower/toilet. The washing-up area is located directly outside the female toilets, which isn’t ideal.

We also found it difficult to find a suitable camping pitch. It wasn’t due to a lack of space overall, but because the site is quite hilly. Most of the flat areas had already been taken by other campers, leaving very few suitable pitches available. As it’s a “pitch where you like” campsite, it can be challenging to find an appropriate spot, especially if you arrive later in the day.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We're sorry to hear that aspects of your stay didn't meet your expectations.

We understand that the location and size of the toilet facilities may not suit everyone's preferences. While their position is fixed, we work hard to keep them clean well maintained and easily accessible from all areas of the campsite.

Regarding the pitches, we have about 50 perfectly level pitches. As we're a countryside campsite, some areas by nature do have natural very scenic undulations. On the day you were here there were some perfectly level pitches left!

We do our best to direct guests to the most suitable pitches, and we're always happy to help if anyone would like to move subject to availability.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked A real hidden gem!
We loved absolutely everything about this campsite!
It was the most perfect relaxing break.
Great site, owners are lovely and welcoming.
Facilities are great.

Disliked Shared hand towel in the bathroom.

From the manager: Thanks for your review !

Towels are changed regularly throughout the day !

Our toilets don’t have exit door handles which you do not have to touch on leaving!

It is a fact tests have proven that they are contaminated with faeces microbes. E coli, Staph A and Strep. Viruses also detected are Nora virus.
On conclusion may be the modern toilet blowers are not as clean as we think ?

Best wishes

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked There are a lot of positives about this site and we enjoyed our 2 night stay . The electric pitches look flat and are thoughtfully laid out close to the toilets and communal buildings. These over look a well kept grass area , with benches and small pond. Communal building(log cabin feel) is a nice touch by the owners, with coffee and microwave available plus information about the surrounding area. The non electric pitches are on the next field. Although this area is fairly uneven it is possible to find some flat surfaces and privacy. You will be located further from the toilets so have this in mind if you have no facilities in your own set up.
The site is next to a large lake which takes around 40 minutes to walk around and the path is fairly flat. Ellesmere can be reached by walking along the canal and takes 45-50 mins. ( obviously you can also drive). Highly recommend you do this if you like walking. Ellesmere is a nice town to visit and very close to the mere

Disliked This will be a minor point for some but the washing up station is right outside the toilet block and we felt very privacy of using the loo was an issue at times. This shouldn’t put you off though, as I’ve written above there are so many plus points

Liked Loved this site, gorgeous location with beautiful walks. Site was perfectly maintained and a pleasure to stay in. Facilities were perfect! Particularly loved The Cabin was a fantastic shared space with internet and a kettle to make a morning cuppa. Powered grass caravan site

Liked Large adult only site next to Colemere with access to the mere from the bottom of the park. Spacious pitches, especially the none electric side of the site.

There's free WiFi in the communal area. EE data was very intermittent but O2 wasn't bad.

There's a communal area and kitchen for campers and a couple of landscaped ponds with seating. The park and facilities were spotless. Hosts David and Ingrid were lovely.

Handy for Ellesmere where I can recommend the Boathouse for breakfast and The Red Lion for tea.

Disliked Toilet block is small and doesn't have a decent sized sink in the men's. My wife pointed out that anyone using the sink in the ladies blocks the entrance to the toilets.

This didn't distract from our holiday in anyway but worth pointing out.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We’re sorry to hear you were disappointed by the ladies’ toilet facilities.

Unfortunately, we currently only have one ladies’ toilet basin available due to the layout of our premises. We understand this can be inconvenient during busy periods which we are hoping to resolve.

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour. On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds. The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere. Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too. If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach. By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
