  • Adventurous site set in 250 acres of woodland and other rural scenery
  • A mile from Walesby village and 35 minutes' drive from Lincoln
  • On-site bar and shop; over 40 leisure activities on land and water
If you're looking to alternate between relaxing in 250 acres of Robin Hood country and a whole host of adventurous activities for guests over the age of four, seek out a spot at Walesby Forest in leafy Nottinghamshire. The vast range of leisure activities here should help even those averse to alfresco exercise get moving, with popular options including watersports, climbing, archery and rifle shooting. A friendly team of dedicated instructors is on hand to make sure all that outdoor action takes place in a safe, low-pressure environment. The programme is updated daily, with a flexible play and pay policy to keep it all affordable. Time to swap sporty sessions for a bit of downtime? Take your pick from drinks or snacks at the bar, a poolside snooze or rambles through the site's wild woodland areas, where all sorts of animals can be spotted. Angling fans may find it similarly peaceful to take advantage of the free river Maun fishing opportunities available on site. When it comes to food, there's a handy catering barn (which, with advance notice, can sort meals for guests with special dietary requirements), plus a small shop that stocks plenty of sweet treats and souvenirs. If you'd rather step out for dinner, make your way into Walesby (a mile away), where two popular establishments are all set to serve up pub-cooked food. While there may not be a playground on site, there are 250 acres of space for ball games and adventures.

What customers say

Huge site packed with activities, especially for kids. Praised for spacious pitches & friendly staff. Downsides: toilets/showers need a spruce-up, power issues on some pitches, and pricey extras.

Power optional grass site (large, no pets)

Liked There is lots to do at Walesby Forest on and off site. The activities on site are good, £20 per day or £11 half a day, the activities each day are unlimited, so your child can access them from 9am until 12:30 and then 1:30 till 5pm.There is some evening entertainment for the children but if that’s not your thing you can access barrels for making campfires or BBQs.
There is a bar and gift/convenience store on site too but anything bigger Asda and Tesco are about a 5 minute drive towards Boughton.
Offsite activities you have Crestwell Craggs, Thoresby Park with Bird of Prey displays, gardens and cafeteria. There is also Robin Hood Caves which is worth a look to explore…. If you just like simply walking there are many paths and trails accessible from site.
If you experience any issues, the Walesby forest maintenance team are quick to help and rectify any issue that may arise. Our first day we had an issue with the electric hookup, where the electric kept tripping but this problem soon rectified and we did not experience anymore issues.

Disliked The only dislike was the water activities available at Walesby. The area is quite small and those who canoed, kayaked or rafted would soon get bored. I think a little more thought into this area would help gain more interest. For example: obstacles to teach them how to navigate the boats. A little more structure to the activity would help massively. Maybe a little lesson offshore prior to accessing the boat would help for those who had never done it before to prevent any incidences or pulling people off the lake.
There is also an area for fishing which is sign posted on activities board. We explored this area and there are no real platforms to fish safely for children plus it’s open to the public too.
Adequate signposting for the fishing would be good too as we did not see much of these….so possibly could have been in wrong area despite following the map provided.

Unpowered grass site (large, no pets)

Liked The closeness to the amenities. Daughter enjoyed the activities. Blue Peter badge holder. I've knocked the facilities and activities down this time as I think more options could be explored when young children are on site and cleanliness of toilets and showers.

All staff on site very helpful and courteous.
Bar very clean and good choice of food and drink options.

The pool attendant that was organising people in and out of the pool on Saturday did a fabulous job.

Location lots of places to go from site. Rufford, Clumber, Clipstone. Sherwood Observatory. Newark castle and Civil war museum.

Take out menu left on tables in the bar at night, although we didn't choose this option nice to have this perhaps this should be given at the reception at check in.

Disliked Toilets and shower areas need regularly cleaning hourly!!

No BBQs or campfires on this weekend however we took a gas fire and fake flickering fire to give the same camping experience temperature dropped quite significantly. In this case make more things available on display like your blankets, lights a gas fire option perhaps? Or even the nice wooden lanterns you have to paint for kids. Make features of what you have got available.

Think the large white tent on the camping side A could be used for cooler nights when camp fires can't be used perhaps just a small seating area quiet somewhere away from the karaoke to relax.

Shop could stock a lot more items i came one year when you had some lovely necklaces and bracelets. I gave my daughter as tan extra stocking filler for xmas.

No jigsaws. No reading books other than the history on Walesby and only colouring books for children. What about nature books, sticker books word searches or crossword books.

Nice to see some inflatables in the shop for the pool. We took our own a rubber ring donut but nice to see other options available perhaps advertised this at the pool entrance as a young boy was upset it was too deep so my daughter let him have our rubber ring.

Unfortunately one family not us and I hope they raise this they were not happy on the Sunday they had a boy and girl aged 5 and only two activities open for them to do Cave Maze and Low ropes perhaps they should be free if only two things open. The parents then had to purchase two archery sets in the shop.

Power optional grass site (no pets)

Liked Loved the big site and loads of room. The wristbanded activities were fabulous and kept everyone entertained (Laser tag was a particular favorite!) Great having bar and food options available too.

Disliked Our site (E) was just a bit too far away from the toilets to be comfortable. Although we loved the quiet and space, we would opt to be closer to a toilet if (when) we visit again.

Unpowered grass site (no pets, wild)

Liked Using the wild camping area and being able to choose where & how you pitched up! Brilliant facilities lots of fresh water pumps.

Disliked Only 1 pot washing area which was a 15 minute walk from the wild camping but suppose that makes it ‘wild’. No biggie, nothing a kettle and bucket doesn’t solve :)

Local attractions

With its tales of Robin Hood, ancient oaks, country houses and lush leafy landscape, Sherwood Forest has something to keep most sorts content. Clumber Park (15 minutes' drive) has long avenues of limes and open heath to stroll through, while over by the Major Oak (10 minutes) you can get acquainted with one of the area's stand-out trees before setting out on several waymarked hiking routes (maps available at the visitor centre next door). Similarly close to base is Go Ape Sherwood (10 minutes), where a medley of segways and zipwires nicely complement any on-site activities you've got up to during your stay. Kids not quite old enough for that kind of activity? Fear not, as families with younger members will find plenty of age-appropriate entertainment at Wheelgate Waterpark (15 minutes) or Sundown Adventureland (20 minutes). Spending time in town is also doable here, as Walesby Forest is just over half an hour from Lincoln's castle, cathedral and urban arboretum. Meanwhile, over in Newark (30 minutes), there's Civil War heritage, antiques shops and weekly markets in a handsome Georgian square, plus hovercraft tours if you fancy something a little different.
