  • Eco-friendly, carbon-neutral retreat surrounded by Lincolnshire woods
  • A 25-minute drive from Burghley House; half an hour from Rutland Water
  • Private swimming; pub a short walk away
Green-fingered folks may want to gather around for Mayday Retreats. An eco-friendly and carbon-neutral retreat with a two-acre field surrounded by Lincolnshire woodlands, this site is designed for a relaxing stay and easy-feeling break from the day-to-day… and 25 minutes’ drive away from Burghley House’s deer park and gardens and half an hour from Rutland Water’s watersports, there’s plenty to do day-on-day. There’s private swimming on site (as with the other activities, you’ll need to request this when you’re booking your retreat). Otherwise, countryside walks might also make the cut – there are lots of footpaths with splendid scenery around here, whether in local woods or country parks. Conveniently, restaurants are close by to this site. Those of you looking for a local pub will find one such place 10 minutes’ walk away - so leave the car behind if you wish. Otherwise, there are many more spots to eat out in Bourne, five minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Active types are likely to find a calling from Mayday Retreats… perhaps walking, cycling, watersports or boat trips in the country park at Ferry Meadows in Nene Park (half an hour’s drive) or cycling, walking and more splash-worthy pursuits at Rutland Water (half an hour) - namely, swimming, watersports and the aqua park for a slippy and slidey start to the day. To continue your peaceful pedals around these parts, there’s bicycle hire available at the Grimsthorpe Castle Park & Gardens (15 minutes) or for more lazy wanders, you might want to choose the gardens, café and deer park at Burghley House Gardens & Deer Park (25 minutes) or Bowthorpe Oak (10 minutes), a park that’s home to England’s oldest oak tree. Keep up the pace with more walking routes around Bourne Wood (25 minutes) or take it up a notch with theme park rides at Twinlakes Park (50 minutes). When you’re finally ready to wind things down and poke your nose into somewhere with some local history, the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton, Woolsthorpe Manor House (half an hour) is a fitting place for that.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Fantastic facilities; kitchen tent as well as toilet block and shower block. The site is very quiet and really good location to walk to local pubs as well as a short drive from Rutland Water. We booked the pool and yoga which made the stay very relaxing!

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: This is a fabulous little campsite. The amenities are clean and well presented. There is a fire pit and communal seating area. The kitchen tent was a delightful bonus with a sink and electric sockets, a kettle and complimentary tea and coffee. It rained on our 2nd day so we were able to cook breakfast in the dry. The swimming pool was excellent. Perfect size for a few lengths and to relax in. There is an abundance of wildlife to watch and we loved the wild flowers patches. Lisa, the host was so wonderful, welcoming and helpful.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: What a find! A genuinely friendly host and a really lovely, well thought out site. There are limited pitches with lots of space around them so you don’t feel on top of other people. There is a bit of noise from the main road but I always take ear plugs so this is never a problem. The facilities were spotlessly clean and the kitchen tent with a kettle, hot plate and chairs was a bonus and a great indoor space to sit with a cuppa had it been raining. Would love to stay again in the future.
