Messingham Grange: Pitches on site

General

  • Spacious countryside site on a challenging 18-hole golf course
  • A 15-minute drive from Scunthorpe and 50 minutes from Cleethorpes
  • Golf driving range, tennis courts, fishing lake, clubhouse and bar

Fancy spending hols swinging a club, casting a line or serving up some aces? Head along to Messingham Grange, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire – for a hole in one, lucky catch and grand slam all rolled into one.

The site’s on the grounds of an 18-hole and par-71 golf course, making it an absolute cinch to roll out of bed and onto the links. It’s a challenging course, but there’s also a 20-bay floodlit driving range for perfecting that swing and a resident PGA professional to hand out lessons.

Anyone who’s not much of a golfer, or who’s tagging along with a regular Tiger Woods, might prefer to spend days being active in a different way… Luckily, the site is well-designed for active types, with five outdoor tennis courts during high season (three in low) and a fishing lake full of carp, perch, roach and bream.

Never fear, that all-important 19th hole is present and correct too: a fully-licensed bar serves drinks into the evening, and the clubhouse doles out food daily. Prefer a self-catered option? Barbecues are welcome on site and there’s a small grocery shop in nearby Messingham (five minutes' drive).

Beautiful site, lovely clean toilets, lovely manager on the second day, fun on the driving range and 18 hole golf course with excellent greens. The fishing pond looked well but the extremely hot weather stopped us fishing due to a lack of oxygen in the water.

    Disliked:

after eventually erecting our awning to the motorhome the general manager appeared stating that our awning was a tent and tents were not allowed. We explained that we bought it as an awning and it said awning on the bag it came in, however, the GM insisted it was not and pointed out the shape of another awning on the site attached to a caravan. we realised it was not worth arguing about so the GM came up with a compromise in that we paid for an extra pitch, we did not want to argue so agreed. in addition when arriving i was told that i had not paid for extra people, which i was sure i had online as they were aware of the number of people booked in, and paid extra. The next day i went to the clubhouse to settle the extra cost. the manager, a lovely lady whose name i forget, confirmed that we did in fact have an awning. we compromised with the cost and all was well but i felt that the "up his own arse" GM spoiled the first few hours of our stay. Made us feel like we were not the class of customer they wanted. We have a modest ford motorhome which is clean and well kept together with modest attachments. Not top end at all but aren't we entitled to be on a posh spot as any if we pay the fee.!!!!. Despite that we had a lovely stay and hope the GM has a word with himself about his behaviour.

From the manager...

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your interesting review. I always find it fascinating how people's perception of a situation is somewhat different to reality. In this case, I do not consider myself to be "up my own arse", but was merely assuring myself that we were complying with the terms of our license issued by our local authority. I can assure you that it was not my intention to "spoil" your holiday but the reality was, you had erected a tent, next to your motorhome. The tent featured an open-style porch which you had loosely tied to the side of your motorhome and was not a driveaway motorhome awning thereby contravening our site license. We are disappointed that you did not feel like the class of customer we wanted, this was certainly not the case, however we are duty bound to uphold the terms of our site license, and deliver parity for all our customers.

I am happy you enjoyed your stay, and made the most of the facilities we have on offer, and hope to welcome you back to Messingham Grange at some point in the future.

Kind regards,

Kevin

Local attractions

Lured here by that on-site fishing lake? That’s not the only fishing hot spot hereabouts: it’s a five-minute walk from the site to Messingham Grange fisheries, where carp, crucian and ide swim about, and a 30-minute drive to Lindholme Lakes, which are full of carp, silverfish and F1s.

Prefer wildlife encounters to be less of a predatory affair? It’s a five-minute walk to Messingham Zoo, where guests can get up close with raccoons, prairie dogs, arctic foxes and more, and there are safari-style rambles among lions, tigers and (polar) bears within 45 minutes’ drive at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

History buffs can dive into the past quite easily round here too: wander the streets of Gainsthorpe Medieval Village 15 minutes from base (a little imagination may be required there), tour Normanby Hall's Regency-era mansion and its parklands 25 minutes away, and explore the intriguing Mr Straw’s House about 50 minutes from base.

Urban days (and plenty more history) can be had starting in Cleethorpes (50 minutes) on the boating lake, beach and Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, before moving on to the big city at Lincoln (also 50 minutes) to see the castle, cathedral and copy of the Magna Carta, or to Hull and its art galleries, museums and The Deep aquarium an hour away.

Must see

  • Far Ings National Nature Reserve (23.3 kilometres)
  • Ferens Art Gallery (33.2 kilometres)
  • The Deep (33.2 kilometres)
