  • Grass pitches at a simple pop-up site on a farm in the Cotswolds
  • Chipping Campden 10 minutes’ drive; Stratford-upon-Avon half an hour
  • Dog park; five minutes’ drive from a village pub; views of hills
On the edge of the Cotswolds National Landscape, almost halfway between Chipping Campden (10 minutes’ drive) and Stow-on-the-Wold (15 minutes), is Spittle Farm Campsite. Surrounded by gentle hills and open farmland, pitches at this pop-up site are on a vast grass lawn with plenty of space to relax. Frills are limited, but there are showers and portable toilets on site, plus an enclosed area where you can exercise your dog when darkness starts falling and you might not want to make for the hills. A railway line runs alongside the property, which is a working farm; this may result in some train noise during the day. However, chances are that during the day you’ll be out and about making the most of your splendid surroundings, whether hiking at Dover’s Hill (10 minutes), a natural amphitheatre with far-reaching views across the Vale of Evesham; climbing Ebrington Hill (10 minutes), the highest point in Warwickshire; or delving into ancient history at the Rollright Stones (20 minutes), a complex of megalithic monuments. Within a half-hour drive it’s also possible to reach Stratford-upon-Avon, as well as elegant country houses, animal parks and miniature railways. As for the evening, there are several pubs within a short drive, the easiest to reach (via the B4479) being the one in the village of Blockley (five minutes).

Peaceful spot on a sheep farm, great views & spacious pitches. Clean facilities, with a top-notch shower. Loved the quiet and handy location. A few noted basic facilities needed minor tweaks, but most loved it and want to return. Train noise minimal.

Liked This is a self-serve, farmer's field.
It is a lovely spot, beautiful views and very tranquil.
Lovely, open space.
A 5 minute walk from the village where my extended family were staying - ideal location.
The shower was fantastic!

Disliked Porta -loos. Just two of them.
It wasn't clear how often or if they were cleaned, and they were pretty smelly.
I understand there's not another option just yet, but plumbed in water toilets would make all the difference.
Also, to help others, no washing area other than the one shower.
We were fine for a few days.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site (medium)

Liked Very quiet, plenty of space, toilets and shower very clean, nice and powerful shower plenty of room in there, very helpful host, had a minor problem with our wrong pitch number when we turned up but within less than 2 minutes we were given a new pitch number that was the same size

Disliked Only bad thing I can think of was that the drinking water was very warm but I cannot blame the host for that due to the extreme summer we’ve had.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site (medium)

Liked It was excellent. Pitches were spacious and well set out. The toilets and shower were clean and the water station was easily accessible. The sheep in the field kept us entertained. It was also quiet and tucked away.

Disliked Nothing to dislike. You could hear the trains occasionally but that didn’t bother us.

Liked The campsite is very peaceful and quiet, based on a small sheep farm.

Good size pitches, grass or electric hook up. It has portaloos and the most amazing hot shower, and as a new site the owner is constantly looking to make improvements.

There is a train line that runs along the far edge of the field but it's not intrusive at all, nothing like having constant road noise!

Highly recommend this site if you want a well located but peaceful site.

Local attractions

There are more than 1,000 species of tree at Batsford Arboretum and Garden Centre (10 minutes’ drive), including cherry and maple trees from Japan, magnolias and bamboo. For something more active, next door are an archery club and a falconry centre with close-encounter experiences with raptors and owls. National Trust - Chastleton House (20 minutes) is an elegant mansion dating back to the early 17th century – and little has changed since then. Check out the display of Flemish tapestries in the Fettiplace Room and the plasterwork decorating the barrel vault of the Long Gallery, then head into the garden for a stroll along the Victorian-era Wilderness Walk. A visit to Stratford-upon-Avon (half an hour) doesn’t have to be all about its most famous resident – though there is a special thrill to watching a Shakespeare play in the intimate Swan Theatre or to being in the home where the Bard was born. In town, you can also check out the automata at the MAD Museum of mechanical art, or hire a rowing boat and explore the riverbanks.
