  • Relaxed family-run site in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley
  • Near Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape
  • Space to play, huge grassy pitches and close to a forest
Picture your next break among green space, woodland walks and cycling trails in the peaceful woodland setting of the famed Forest of Dean, on the edge of the market town of Coleford… You'll get a warm welcome at this relaxed, family-run and family-friendly park, in an area surrounded by ancient castles and abbeys, smashing scenery and miles of waymarked walking and biking trails. As Greenacres Campsite is right in the middle of the Forest of Dean, across the road from a woodland and within walking distance of the River Wye, it's in a good spot for fishing, bike rides and long woodland strolls, as well as easy access to attractions such as Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape at Mallards Pike Lake. Set in a field that stretches across two acres within an 11-acre smallholding, pitches are spacious, level and grassy, and the park is surrounded by huge mature trees that provide good shade and shelter from the elements. Kids should be kept very well occupied at the excellent playground less than five minutes' stroll away, where there's also plenty of space to for ball games and dog walking. Barbecues and campfires are allowed: most handy if you land yourself a fish or two in the Wye or decide to pick up a few sausages in Coleford… Otherwise, there's a good traditional English pub in Newland, a short walk away, and another in Staunton within a 30-minute woodland ramble. The wider local area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and takeaways (many of which are happy to deliver straight to the site).

Power optional grass site

Liked Quiet, clean, nicely kept site

Disliked The way the electric is to be supplied - need to use tech , ie download app etc.
Also entrance road could do with potholes being filled in

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay and hope to welcome you back.
We are trialling the electric app as a step towards metered usage next year - it is good to know what people think and we will take that on board for when we launch it next year.
The drive is next on our list - we are currently waiting on planning permission to alter it and are looking forward to starting work at the end of this season.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked The surroundings were beautiful, close to a lovely village and the reception/shop offered an array of snacks and goodies. The shower facilities were well maintained.

Disliked The downside was the portaloo which was situated directly next to our given numbered pitch. The smell was awful so we had to move our tent set up further away to avoid the smell, and hope that no one was given the next slot

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. I am glad you enjoyed your stay.
Sorry for the portaloo - it was brought in temporarily for a private event and should have been collected before your stay—this was an oversight on my part - I should have checked it was collected. Thankfully you were able to shift your setup, and I appreciate your understanding. I’ll make sure this is avoided in future and look forward to welcoming you back again soon!

Power optional grass site

Liked Very well kept site! Everywhere was beautifully maintained. The showers and toilets were immaculate and modern. Nice little shop, they do coffee and croissants etc. Helpful lady at reception. Lovely walks from site, really enjoyed it, would return with the family.

Disliked Only one tiny thing, on the website it said you could bring your own firepit which I did, then when I asked about blocks to raise it off the ground I was told they don't do that anymore, I would have to hire one off them for £11 including wood, kindling and fire starters, which I did but it would have been good to know.

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types are well catered to around here, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Symonds Yat Rock, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and pony trekking at Bream. If you're into golfing, then you're also in luck: Coleford has two courses, both less than 10 minutes' drive away. Follow the walking trail through the ancient 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – the location for the filming of Dr Who, Star Wars, Merlin and Atlantis – to see rock formations and twisted trees, or visit Clearwell Caves to learn about the forest's 4,500-year ore and ochre mining heritage, both within a couple of easy miles of the site. Heaps of historic spots are within easy reach of Greenacres Campsite too, including Tintern Abbey's ruins and the castles of Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. The Dean Heritage Centre is a short drive away in the valley of Soudley, and comes highly recommended by Greenacres staff.
