  • Small touring site at a Derbyshire village pub
  • Ashbourne and Alton Towers both 15 minutes' drive away
  • Meals and wide range of drinks available in the friendly pub
Parking up by the pub is a fine idea for several reasons – the most important of those being that you’ll be able to have a few drinks of an evening without any worries about having to drive anywhere. That’s the particularly enticing attraction for the Roston Inn, as this site is in the grounds of a friendly Derbyshire pub which is open from 5pm on weekdays and from 12pm on weekends. Once you arrive, you’re likely to want to settle in for a while, either cosying up by the log burner or soaking up the fresh air from one of the outdoor tables. There’s a good range of cask ales, wines and other drinks to choose from, and a tempting food menu of pub classics, grills and kids’ dishes. Working up an appetite for all this should be pretty easy, as there are heaps of excellent days out nearby, from hikes in the Peak District National Park and watersports at Carsington Water to action-packed days at Alton Towers. Back at the pub, you’ll be staying at a small site where the grass touring pitches have hardstanding underneath for sturdiness, electric hookups are included and there are lovely views out over the surrounding countryside. Guests are welcome to pitch up, enjoy the view and then say hello to the owners in the pub when it opens. Toilets and washing facilities are accessible 24 hours per day, and there's a chemical disposal point for guest use as well. Ashbourne and Uttoxeter (both 15 minutes' drive) are your best bets for things like supermarkets, although you should certainly stop in at the Denstone Hall Farm Shop (five minutes) for local treats.

Liked: We got a refund on request

Disliked: We arrived and did not stay . The space was very small and muddy. We could only park if blocked another van in. Lined up like a car park. Very close to each other. We did get a refund. The mud can not be helped but unfortunately not fit to stay .

Liked: The pub was closed when we arrived as it doesn't open till 5pm. The pitches are grass but with hardcore underneath. We were able to pitch but some of the area was boggy and another larger vehicle got stuck. Locals were great and pulled him out. Food was lovely, really quiet pub. Had a nice walk to the river before tea. Staff and locals very friendly. 1 toilet 1 shower but that is all it needs as a very small site. Would recommend when weather not too wet!!

Liked: There are no electric hard standing pitches. The small area with EHU is grass and very wet. A van pulled on just ahead of us and was immediately stuck. We left as he was phoning the AA

Liked: Good location for the peaks and local towns as well as decent local walks . Food in the pub was excellent and the locals seem welcoming and friendly ( they probably realise that the tourists are helping the pub stay open at a time when so many others have closed down )

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: Friendly staff and locals, clean toilet facilities and shower, good size portions of food in pub and very tasty.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but we have a 7.5m motorhome and the pitch wasn't hard standing as advertised so we got stuck in the mud so would suggest asking if you can stay in carpark if it's been raining lots like recently, although then you may not be able to get to hook up.
