Perfect campsite

Aug 2026

Liked This is hands down our favourite campsite. We stayed in 2022 and again this summer having tried a number of other places in between. Clean, fairly priced, excellent facilities. Water available either on each pitch or within easy walking distance. Composting toilets within easy walking distance of each pitch too (a genius idea rather than having the only facilities near the entrance like most sites). Showers and charging points make the whole camping experience feel completely relaxing. My son commented it was more like glamping than camping and I agree - we left feeling refreshed and happy and can’t wait to come back next year.

Liked The showers were great and the campsite was busy but not overcrowded - everyone had their own space. Enough toilets and the charging area was much appreciated. Incredible location with great views.

Jul 2026

Liked Gorgeous site with spectacular views. Flat pitches, clean toilets and showers. We booked dinner on the Saturday and breakfast for the Sunday from Ca’s Citchen which were both really good. We will be returning in 2027!

Disliked Not disliked as such but only two showers (one for gents, one for ladies) so maybe in future install more? More than one sink would be good too (although the washing up area could at a pinch be used to get water to clean teeth).

Lovely caravan/mobile home with lots of character and relaxing garden

Aug 2023

Liked Location, quiet, well-equipped caravan, friendly owners on hand if needed, parking next to accommodation. The kids loved chilling out in the hammock by the fire pit in the evening and we enjoyed a glass of wine by the log burner at night. A relaxing break where we could walk to some tors from where we stayed, play board games, go to the beach or travel to National Trust/English Heritage places as we chose.

Friendly owner and relaxing, secure, site

May 2023

Liked We stayed in Balmoral for three nights over half term. We had plenty of room to relax, the cabin was clean and the shower powerful. It was a lovely stay and the weather was also kind to us as we explored the nearby National Trust places and beach. While we had our own facilities we also took a look around the rest of the site and it’s really pretty - picnic tables and planted flower beds with a well-appointed toilet and shower block (we were scouting it out to return for camping later in the year). Secure site with padlock on gate - really good feature.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind comments about the cabin and site. We look forward to seeing you again

Great for a quiet family getaway

Aug 2021

Liked Shower! It was very welcome after a walk up Pen Y Fan. Lots of room between pitches (we could pitch anywhere, and the field was large enough we didn’t need to be crowded). Compost toilets cleaned regularly and much better than portaloos.

Disliked Nothing - we really enjoyed it and looked to see if we could book an extra night but, alas, not to be as they were fully booked.

We had a great time at the site and will be returning next year!

Aug 2021

Liked Clean portaloos, huge pitches, view. Honestly the view is amazing and we were also lucky to be there during full moon with clear skies - stargazing and a moonlit Chesil Beach! Lots of room for kids to run around, but also not crowded so kids (and other people) aren’t a noise nuisance. It’s a really well thought out site (wide driving track down the field with pitches either side means tents have a lot of space in front of them, for example; also liked they specified which side of pitch to park as this protects your tyres from other people’s tent pegs). Because of the hill, you can’t see Weymouth and the local army place so it does feel (and sound) like you’re in the middle of nowhere while also being a convenient five minutes from a supermarket. The lagoon is beautiful and it’s well worth a walk around the local part of the coastal path. We had a thoroughly great time. Butterflies, bats, birds and a beach. Wonderful.

Disliked Nothing - it’s a basic campsite, but ticks all the boxes for what you’d want for this. Only suggestion for improvement would be a cinder bin for barbecue coals to avoid fire risk of people dumping them in main bin still hot. Perhaps an exclusive hand washing tap outside portaloos with a soap dispenser? You can see I’m being really picky - there’s nothing to fault here, it’s genuinely a lovely site.

Best kept secret

Jun 2015

Liked The tipi was ready for us on our arrival and, as previous visitors, we were left in peace to set up and organise ourselves for what would turn out to be a very relaxing week! We travelled around the area most days, using the farm as a base to explore the countryside. On the Thursday however we remained on the site, in our private field overlooking woodland, and it was utter bliss. I would thoroughly recommend a stay here - relaxing, private, calm, perfect. The hot shower is very welcome after a day's cycling on the Camel Trail and equally the washing line is useful for drying wetsuits after a day at the beach. The kitchen is well-equipped and most nights we catered for ourselves (only succumbing to the Chinese takeaway on one night). We had a campfire at the fire pit on most nights using wood bought from the farm - a lovely experience on a summer's evening! They even sell marshmallows. Bakesdown is very relaxed and quiet - we know there were at least two other visitors to this small site, but didn't really see them. For seclusion, privacy, relaxation and enjoyment I don't think this place can be beaten.

Disliked The magpies stole our cheese! And a whole loaf of bread. Might bring a bread bin next time, that'll fox them. In heavy rain - which we had one night - the rain can drip through to the inner lining, run down, and onto the floor of the tipi near the door. We knew - from previous experience - where the danger zone is therefore didn't leave any of our stuff there. The owners had also put a towel near the door to act as a shield. It's a design flaw with the tipi (the inner lining should probably go much closer to the door rather than stopping several feet away from it) and not the owners' fault.

Absolutely fantastic, relaxing stay

Sept 2014

Liked * The Tipi was clean, tidy, and welcoming * Private field with kitchen, compost toilet, shower hut and tipi with fantastic views over the woodland meant that we were able to feel we had truly "got away from it all" * Conversely, it was nice to be able to walk to the farm to get fresh eggs and firewood when we needed it! * Local shop with everything we needed to top up over the week * Well-equipped kitchen * Thoughtful owners had left handwash, washing up liquid and cleaning equipment for the kitchen and dustpans and brushes for the tent and shower room * Relaxed atmosphere * Location is superb for touring North Cornwall and Devon * Use of fridge at farm - ideal for keeping milk for coffees fresh * The owls, bats and squirrels - lovely place for wildlife! * Lovely warm shower * Wonderful, welcoming owners.

Disliked * Very minor gripe - the grass was a bit long on the path from the car to the tipi and nearly to the top of my son's wellies. That said, had we mentioned it at the time I bet the owners would have cut the grass as they were incredibly helpful and nice people.

Brilliant place to stay and explore the south tip of Cornwall

Jul 2013

Liked The owners were friendly and helpful, the static caravan we stayed in was clean and tidy and the site was immaculate. The location was perfect - twenty minutes walk from Kennack Sands (a dream of a beach, and very quiet at the start of July) and we were in easy drive of Helston and The Lizard. The on-site facilities were fine - our son enjoyed the play area, the pizza takeaway is brilliant (definitely worth a look!) and the on-site shop wasn't massively overpriced (I have stayed in other sites where the shop basically held people to ransom with extortionate prices - this was not one of them). We were made to feel welcome from the second we got there and we will definitely be returning again.

Disliked There wasn't much to gripe about. Apparently a group of school children had been there the week before, so there were some basic things missing from our caravan - a remote for the television, a lighter for the cooker, tin opener. None of these were an issue however - we just let the friendly owner know and were given matches and a tin opener to replace them!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. We are delighted that we met your expectations. Our static caravans do come fully equipped but on the rare occasion some items can be taken such as the items you have mentioned But we do keep a topped up stock of these items We look forward to a return visit.
