A good balance of wild and clean loos.

Sept 2026

Liked Really peaceful site. We arrived and rang and were told to pitch wherever we wanted. Beautiful scenery. The two toilets were spotlessly clean and dry. They are in a mobile unit, but much nicer than “portaloos”. Well stocked with loo roll, decent wash hand basin with soap and hand drying paper. Washing up sink is in this area too, and a separate water tap. Other than this it’s a lovely wild camping experience, no marked pitches or other facilities. I feel it has the balance just right. There was a largish mixed youth and adult group (poss D of E), in a large tent while we were there, and they were sat out with a campfire into the evening, but were so quiet and the toilets still remained clean too. I feel this is the kind of campsite where the users respect the place and each other. I’d recommend and we’d definitely return.

Disliked I’m being very picky but, the grass was quite long. I’m all for camping fields not being mown to within an inch of their lives, I like to see proper grass, but on a dewy autumn morning it was long enough to cover my shoes and get my feet wet. I appreciate it’s a working farm though and we stayed during their busy grass silage cutting season, so the camping field may not always be like this.

Friendly, pitch anywhere large walled field, drinking water tap, loo.

Aug 2022

Liked Stunning location, centrally located for touring the Peak District, both the towns and the off the beaten track areas. This campsite is exactly what it says it is, wild camping with a couple of extra touches. The field is well maintained and spread out, you just turn up and pitch in a space of your choosing. It was busy bank holiday, and the field was near enough full, but it never felt crowded at all. There are two flushing toilets in little sheds with a basin in each also, bring your own loo roll, soap and towel. There is also a drinking water tap on site, which was all we needed. We used our own camping toilet and were pleasantly surprised to discover they have emptying facilities for this too. For us personally this is the right balance of providing facilities whilst being wild . We found the campsite peaceful, the usual distant chit chat, children playing, quiet music, you can hear into early evening, totally silent throughout the night. The owner is extremely friendly and pleasant. We had no cause for complaint, but he seemed like he’d be very approachable if you did want to bring something up with him. We didn’t use one of his fire pits, but plenty of people had hired them during our stay and it was lovely to see them dotted about the site in the evening. He sells the wood for them and seemed to have a plentiful supply. Although you have to use his, lots of sites don’t allow them at all, so this is an added bonus here. There was a mix of different sized tents, tourers and custom vans during our visit and a mix of families and age ranges. Space to put a wind break next to your tent to make a little kitchen/seating area if you wished to. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.
