Bison on the farm
Playing on the swing

  • Peaceful countryside stays at a family-run Alabama farm
  • Chewacla State Park and Columbus, GA within a half-hour drive
  • Farm produce to buy, including fresh eggs and grass-fed bison meat
If you’re more of a state park camping person than someone who likes fully equipped resorts, you should definitely take a look at Bama Bison Farm. This veteran-owned family farm four miles from Crawford, Alabama is home to an uncluttered and spacious campsite that’s just right for simple and peaceful rural breaks. Come along here and you’ll be staying in a hay field that’s surrounded by tall pine trees for shade and shelter and has plenty of space to get yourselves set up as you wish – perhaps putting up an awning or gazebo for a bit of extra outdoor space. It’s all very laidback and relaxed, with dogs permitted, and room for the kids to run about and play with things like the big swing. And it’s also very peaceful, with guests asked to observe quiet hours from 10pm to 7am. Part of that peaceful vibe involves keeping the facilities to a minimum, so it’s worth noting that while you will have access to a coin-operated launderette, there are no toilets or showers for guests. Keeping things simple means this is a great spot in which to unwind, appreciate nature and look up into the starry skies at night. It’s also a great spot for a big cookout – bring your barbecue along and load up with the farm’s own produce for a real taste of the area. A whole range of bison meat products are available to buy, along with seasonal veg and some free-range eggs for your breakfast. Campfires are permitted too, for those times when you just fancy a fireside drink and chat.

Local attractions

Part of the attraction of this place is the chance to chill out on site, perhaps following a walking trail around the farm or asking the owners for a farm tour; there’s also a pond stocked with bass and bream for catch-and-release fishing. Despite the relaxed rural atmosphere of the farm, good access to the road network means it’s easy to get out and about from here. That might mean heading out to Chewacla State Park (half an hour’s drive) for some outdoor time, signing up for rafting with Whitewater Express (25 minutes), playing a round at RTJ Golf Trail at Grand National (40 minutes) or checking out the unusual exhibits at Museum of Wonder Drive Thru (15 minutes). East Alabama Motor Speedway (10 minutes) is also close by. For a dip into city life, head to Columbus, Georgia (25 minutes), to visit the National Infantry Museum, National Civil War Naval Museum and Springer Opera House, or turn the other way to Auburn for the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, Auburn Raptor Centre and some good Asian food shopping.
