It's free, quick and easy!
- In a scenic seaside resort town on the Costa del Azahar
- A 15-minute walk from the nearest sandy beach
- Restaurant, terrace bar, kids’ and adults’ pools and free car wash
Sun, sea, sand … and Hollywood shooting locations? If that sounds like dream hols material, call Action! on a stay at the family-friendly Camping El Cid in the Castellón seaside resort town of Peñiscola.
Peñiscola – the ‘city in the sea’ – is worth immediate explores on arrival: it’s a former Game of Thrones filming location, and it’s easy to see why. Medieval walls and a looming castle built by the Knights Templar give it an old-world vibe, and beaches, galleries, museums and gardens mean it’s a cinch to entertain everyone in the family whatever their tastes.
The nearest beach is 15 minutes’ walk away, and there’s a waterpark less than five minutes’ drive from base, but there’s no need to go that far for a splashing good time – two pools are on site (one for kids and one for grownups) for lazy days by the water.
Clamber out of the pool and onto the terrace bar for a few drinks in the afternoon or call into the restaurant for more substantial fare… then pass the time with a round or two of pétanque before the high-season evening entertainment kicks in.
The site also has a supermarket where guests can nab groceries, drinks, takeaway food and bread baked fresh daily. And it’s not just stomachs that get the star treatment – a free on-site car wash along with excellent amenities means that everyone (and everything) can leave feeling thoroughly pampered.

Local attractions
This is a top spot for adventurous types: the Irta mountains are a 20-minute drive away for climbs and clambers, and are part of the Natural Park of Serra d’Irta, where there are plenty of hiking and biking routes to follow.
If that’s not enough outdoor time, the site is less than an hour from Ebro Delta Natural Park and Reserve and Pret de Cabanes-Torreblanca Natural Park, and the five-kilometre coastal Via Verde route for walkers and cyclists between Oropesa and Benicàssim is 40 minutes away.
City days aren’t too much of a jaunt if anyone’s craving that urban feel – it’s an hour and a half in the car from here to Valencia, home to museums, palaces, gardens, an aquarium and a zoo (and loads of shopping of course).
Budding zoologists who aren’t up for that trip might prefer Jardin del Papagayo, where they can get hands on with some colourful parrots, or they might be lured by the promise of thrill rides at PortAventure theme park, a little over an hour up the coast.
