- Kruger National Park tours available on site
- Plunge pool, kitchen and covered eating lapa
Ready to hear the call of the wild? Waking to the chatter of blue monkeys at dawn, and listening to the lions and hyenas going about their lives in the distance?
Bag a berth at Amanzimlotzi Riverside Bush Camp and you’re in for a real bushveld experience, staying at a friendly family-run place on the banks of the Klaserie river. In an area known for its fancy luxury lodges, this place has maintained a simpler vibe in keeping with its rural surrounds and with canny eco-friendly features including solar power and home-grown grub.
It’s far from basic though – the place is kitted out with a kitchen and bathroom building, a covered lapa for alfresco dinners and a small swimming pool for cooling off after a day out. Being a sociable kind of set-up, evenings are frequently spent gathering with your hosts and fellow travellers for pot luck dinners, braai meals and campfire chats. It’s also possible to order breakfasts if you’ve not had a chance to stock up on supplies.
Getting out into the surrounds is a cinch from here, for you’re on the cusp of the Kruger National Park and there’s a tour operator on site that can hook you up with a whole heap of activities including safari walks and drives, village visits and river canyon hikes.

Local attractions
There’s a reason why folks flock here for safaris: you’re just on the edge of the Kruger National Park, one of the biggest game reserves in the whole of Africa (at a whopping 19,485 square kilometres it’s bigger than some European countries). Safari walks, day-long game drives and longer trips can all be organised on site for a simple way to go in search of the big five.
Should you wish to stretch your legs further there are organised hikes through the Blyde River Canyon and climbs up to the Great Escarpment for stunning views. Or you may wish to hang out with the locals on a village visit, pitching in with fetching water, learning the cooking techniques and shaking your stuff with the dancers.
If you’d like to go it alone for a little while, perhaps pay a visit to Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation Centre, Kinyonga Reptile Centre or the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre – all are less than 45 minutes away by car and do excellent work in conservation and education.
