It's free, quick and easy!
- Stays on a private game reserve in the foothills of the Waterberg
- A five-minute drive from Bela-Bela, and 70 minutes from Pretoria
- Restaurant, braai facilities, game watching, biking trails and a spa
As evening falls, you look to the horizon to watch one of the spectacular sunsets Africa is known for. With sundowner in hand, and just as you’re about to take your first bite of braai, you see a giraffe striding across the site… If that’s the kind of experience you’re looking for, make tracks for Buyskop Lodge, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Bela-Bela in Limpopo.
On a private game reserve in the malaria-free foothills of the Waterberg Biosphere, this site is a prime location for game spotting. There’s a nearby dam where wild animals frequently quench their thirst, so seeing giraffes, kudu, impala, zebras and bushbucks wandering through isn’t unusual (the site team recommends keeping a close eye on small kids for this reason), and the ethos of nature conservation means binoculars and cameras are essential kit to pack.
The location makes nature-filled explores on foot and by bike a cinch without leaving the site – there are 12 kilometres of gravel trails to mountain bike on, and loads of open space for kids to pedal around – and an outdoor pool makes cooling off as simple as jumping in. If leisurely floats in the pool aren’t unwinding enough, saunter over to the Baobab Spa for a beauty treatment or massage.
Evening meals are handily sorted with braai facilities and fresh running water at every pitch – the site’s tapped into a borehole, so no need to lug drinking water along – and an on-site restaurant will prove handy when nights off from cooking are required.

Local attractions
No matter how diverse the group of travellers, the area around Bela-Bela should provide plenty to entertain everyone. Those lured to the site by the promise of animal spotting may not be as lucky as hoped, but fortunately it’s just 10 minutes’ drive to Thaba Kwena crocodile farm, 25 minutes to Bambelela Wildlife Care and Vervet Monkey Rehabilitation, and 40 minutes to ethical experiences with elephants at Adventures with Elephants, where guests can meet, feed and ride the gentle beasts.
Active types may be drawn to hikes and bikes in the Waterberg, and might choose to seek thrills by whizzing through the air at Waterberg Zipline Adventures (10 minutes) or going to war at Skulls Paintball (less than five minutes away). Prefer a more sedate experience? It’s 20 minutes from base to the par-72, 18-hole Koro Creek Bushveld Golf Estate championship course.
City days are within relatively easy reach too: it’s an hour and 10 minutes to Pretoria and its zoo, botanical gardens, historical mansions and markets, and an hour and 45 minutes to the apartheid museum, casino, beer museum and theme park (and lots more) of Johannesburg.
