  • Friendly, laidback Peruvian site in the historical centre of Cusco
  • A 15-minute walk to ancient ruins; five minutes to San Pedro Market
  • On-site restaurant and bar; wellness centre; communal kitchen
A gin bar crossed with an earthy sleeping experience, hunker down in Selina Plaza de Armas Cusco for a laidback stay in the historical centre of the Incan capital, five minutes’ walk away from the cathedral and the old market, 15 minutes from ancient ruins and an hour and 15 minutes from the formidable Sacred Valley. This eco-friendly site has outdoor tipis made from upcycled concrete tubes and organic materials, plus comfy hotel beds, so you’ll feel pretty pampered and ready for an eco-friendly stay. With a restaurant on-site, you can critique and appreciate the local cuisine without going far. You’ll certainly feel in tune with the local culture, as there are locally curated artworks hung all around the site and a library room where you can read up on Incan history. Find your zen in the site’s wellness centre with yoga, meditation and aromatherapy. Treat your tummy to some TLC too, as there’s a communal kitchen where you can prepare fresh meals. Afterwards, unwind with a pisco sour at the bar or mingle with other travelers at one of the many bars and restaurants (shops too, if you need supplies) within five minutes’ walk of the site. San Pedro Market is a five-minute walk too if you fancy browsing alpaca sweaters, palo santo (native healing wood) and rare medicinal herbs.

Local attractions

Being based in Cusco’s historical centre wouldn’t feel quite right without a trip around the historical sites. Visit boulder-like ancient ruins at Saqsaywaman (a 15-minute walk), the golden insides of the Iglesia de la Companía de Jesús (five minutes) or in-depth exhibitions at the Museo Inka (five minutes). Take a local guide and forge your way between the Inca ruins and remote villages plotted around the Sacred Valley (an hour and 15 minutes). There are hilltop markets selling local produce, a river for white water rafting and tracks fit for mountain bikes or your best hiking boots. While you’re there, stop by the salt plains in Moray (an hour and 20 minutes) or Maras (an hour and five minutes), where the crystallised pools look like steps leading downhill and salt farms have tours available. If you’re raring for more action, Action Valley (20 minutes) has a zipline over the treetops of a Peruvian valley, as well as a daring bungee jump and jungle treks.
