It's free, quick and easy!
- Kid-friendly lakeside site surrounded by cycling and walking trails
- Theme parks, zoos, museums and watersports all within an hour’s drive
- Sandy beach, fishing, bike hire, lakeside bistro and ping pong
It's not just the spectacular lake views, the fishing, swimming, and sandy lake beach with sunbathing area and water playground that’ll have you and your offspring mightily excited with a stay at Camping de Watermolen… It’s also only 10 kilometres from here to another splendid spot for water-based action at Leekstermeer – the Drenthe region’s largest lake, no less – for sailing and canoeing, and a short drive to several amusement parks, theme parks, leisure pools and animal-themed attractions.
When you're not stretched out on the sands or helping tiddlies stay afloat in the lake, laze around on site instead: there's plenty of grassy space to bask upon while keeping an eye on the kids at the playground and outdoor ping pong tables. An activity folder has also been created by the Watermolen team to help you navigate the area’s attractions with ease.
On-site sustenance comes in the form of a scenic terrace bistro overlooking the lake, serving full meals and woodfired pizzas at weekends in high season, and drinks and ice creams at other times. If you prefer to prepare your own feasts, barbecues and firepits are allowed, and you can pick up wood, gas and barbecue kits at reception, as well as renting firepits and barbecues if you haven’t brought your own.
Also at reception is a small shop selling essentials, newspapers and hot rolls.

Local attractions
Check out the activity folder for a guide to the walking and cycling routes available both directly from and near the site. The Abel Tasman route is a particularly popular cycling trail, and there’s a splendid forest footpath that runs behind Watermolen for peaceful strolls with the family. Longer walks of anywhere between five and 15 kilometres begin directly on site, as well as from a path that begins at the nearby Doezumertocht canal.
Water babies can continue their adventures over at Leekstermeer lake, 10 kilometres from base, where sailing and canoeing are the primary pursuits. More canoe routes also lie around the nearby villages of Visvliet and Niezijl Lauwerzijl if you fancy checking out the area from its fably scenic waterways.
Family-friendly attractions of all sorts are plentiful around here too: it’s 40 minutes’ drive to AquaZoo Friesland, where you can see pelicans, polar bears and penguins among plenty of other mammalian, reptilian and aquatic critters. A recreation pool and miniature golf course are around 13 kilometres away, and several theme parks and museums (including one dedicated entirely to toys) are all well within an hour’s drive.
