It won’t take long to venture off to Vieste – the seaside town is 10 minutes’ drive away and well worth a trip to wander through the pretty winding streets of the old town, visit the castle and admire the views out over the old lighthouse. Watersports aplenty are available around the beach and harbour in Vieste, and it’s also the place to snag a seat on a boat trip to the Tremiti Islands. The three main islands (San Nicola, San Domino and Capraia) are all stunners, filled with beaches, hiking paths and sea caves, and the surrounding marine reserve has some spectacular snorkelling and scuba diving spots. Back on the mainland, the surrounding Gargano National Park is also fab for a hike or few, with the Umbra Forest, half an hour’s drive away, a popular draw. Also worth a look nearby are the Santa Maria di Merino archaeology site (10 minutes’ drive) and pretty Peschici (25 minutes), a whitewashed seaside village. For a romantic day out with your amore, head to Vico del Gargano (40 minutes) – known locally as the ‘village of love’.
