Villaggio Camping Punta Lunga

60,000 square metres filled with olive, almond and pine trees, and direct access to a sheltered sandy beach – what an utterly fab Apulia coast location has Villaggio Camping Punta Lunga. Given its extreme proximity, it’s likely you’ll spend a fair amount of time on the beach here: the shallow waters and soft sands make it a particularly fine spot for family frolics. The watersports centre has windsurfing lessons and canoes to hire for those who’d like an active day, while the serviced beach and beach bar cater for those who prefer to laze. Dedicated beach fanatics can wander off to a couple more little coves a short walk away, and the seaside town of Vieste is a 10-minute drive away. At times when you’re not on the beach, make use of the site’s other facilities (a fitness room, table tennis and playground among them) or get stuck into the busy schedule of summer excursions, entertainment and kids’ activities. A restaurant and pizzeria are on site for your meals, and the bar has a splendid range of cocktails and other drinks to toast the sunset with. If you’d rather self-cater, there’s a good supply of eats at the well-stocked mini market. As enticing as the pace of life on site may be, it’s worth making the effort to drag yourselves away from the beach occasionally and heading out: within a half-hour drive you can be walking in the mysterious Umbra Forest, poking around in pretty seaside villages or boarding a boat to the stunning Tremiti Islands.

It won’t take long to venture off to Vieste – the seaside town is 10 minutes’ drive away and well worth a trip to wander through the pretty winding streets of the old town, visit the castle and admire the views out over the old lighthouse. Watersports aplenty are available around the beach and harbour in Vieste, and it’s also the place to snag a seat on a boat trip to the Tremiti Islands. The three main islands (San Nicola, San Domino and Capraia) are all stunners, filled with beaches, hiking paths and sea caves, and the surrounding marine reserve has some spectacular snorkelling and scuba diving spots. Back on the mainland, the surrounding Gargano National Park is also fab for a hike or few, with the Umbra Forest, half an hour’s drive away, a popular draw. Also worth a look nearby are the Santa Maria di Merino archaeology site (10 minutes’ drive) and pretty Peschici (25 minutes), a whitewashed seaside village. For a romantic day out with your amore, head to Vico del Gargano (40 minutes) – known locally as the ‘village of love’.
