Budding archaeologists and art historians, this site has your name written all over it: Agricamper Villa Julia Pompei sits on the edge of the ancient city of Pompeii – the entrance to the Archaeological Park can be reached within a five-minute drive. If you play your cards right and make your move immediately after an early breakfast, you might well be the first person in when the gate opens. But the proximity to this important artistic and archaeological site is only one of the reasons to commend this peaceful site – the other major one being its location at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Being greeted by views of the volcano first thing in the morning is a pretty special feeling. Spacious grass and gravel pitches occupy a large garden surrounded by citrus groves, and the site comes with a number of family-friendly amenities, including a parent-and-baby washroom, a barbecue station and shaded dining areas, plus a pétanque court (they call it ‘bocce’ here) and a TV room. A toilet block with facilities for disabled guests, showers and a washing-up area complete the picture. Dogs are welcome here, and the site owners will be happy to pick you up from the train station of Villa Regina, which links to Naples to the north (half an hour by railway) and Sorrento to the south (40 minutes). There are several supermarkets within a 10-minute drive… but why cook your own food when you’re in one of the most gastronomically interesting regions of Italy? The modern town of Pompei (10 minutes’ drive) has plenty of pizzerias and restaurants serving Neapolitan specialities.

Liked Great site views of volcano and only 15 min to the entrance of the pompei site. Owner was very friendly as were all the staff. Very clean facilities

Disliked Facilities a little tired but acceptable
Not easy roads to get in and out of the site. Take a wrong turn at your peril. We have a xc90 and twin axle van and used the avtex sat nav and still had some squeaky moments

Liked Type de camping au top, c'est la 1ère fois que nous allons dans ces campings "agricamper". La propreté est exemplaire, l'équipement est hors normes, frigos, congélateurs, machine à glaçons, meubles d'entreposage et même vaisselle à disposition, une véritable cuisine à disposition, pratique pour ceux qui viennent avec juste une tente. Grosse machine à laver (6e), barbecues, tables picnics sous ombrelles, tout cela sans autorisation quelconque. Il y a aussi des points d'eau partout dans le camping.

Disliked Même s'il est agréable de camper sur de l'herbe, un arrosage quotidien sur les emplacements libres à toutes eaux est abusif, pas très écologique vu les quantités d'eau déversées chaque jour. Il en résulte l'usage d'une tondeuse à gazon casi chaque matin sur une demi heure environ...
Attention à l'accès avant de s'y rendre, surtout pour les caravanes, bien utiliser le lien du camping envoyé avant le séjour. Nous avions pris Maps, qui nous a envoyé par un parcours très étroit, sur deux kms au moins, impossible de se croiser, les voitures en face devaient reculer. Je remercie d'ailleurs la patience des italiens, charmants, je n'ose même pas imaginer cette situation en France... c'est aussi valable pour les camping-car.

Liked Wir konnten spontan um einen Tag umbuchen. Wir verbrachten 2 Tage in der Villa Julia und waren super zufrieden. Sehr netter Empfang, gute Tipps bzgl Supermarkt, Pompeji und Zug nach Neapel. Alles sehr gut und einfach zu erreichen. Die Sanitäranlagen waren ausreichend vorhanden und sehr sauber. Die Duschen waren recht neu. Die Stellplätze im grünen und sehr groß. Dieser Stellplatz ist sehr zu empfehlen.

Local attractions

The Archaeological Park of Pompeii is known for the colourful frescoes of the Villa dei Misteri, the well-preserved mosaics of the House of the Faun and assorted temples. The vast site, which was buried by lava and burning ash spewing out of Vesuvius in 79 AD, also includes the Antiquarium Museum, displaying artefacts unearthed at the site. Built in the late 19th century, the vast Santuario della Beata Vergine Maria del Santo Rosario di Pompei (five minutes’ drive) can hold more than 2,000 people in its richly decorated interior dominated by a gilded organ. Exhibits in the Diocesan Museum include votive offerings. If you fancy a hike (or if you want to see up close what led to the destruction of Pompeii), Vesuvio National Park (25 minutes) has a network of trails, including one crossing the ominously named Valley of Hell. Keep your eyes peeled for foxes and bats, plus peregrine falcons and marsh harriers.
