The French Riviera isn’t all about rubbing elbows with the famed and famous, you know. Sometimes it’s just about well-planned stays at well-placed and well-designed spots, such as Franthéor sur Camping Holiday Green, a sprawling family-friendly site in Saint-Raphaël, 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Fréjus, in the Var. This is the spectacular Côte d’Azur, so be prepared for beachy days – it’s just 10 minutes’ walk to the nearest sandy stretch and a free shuttle travels between sand and site during high season. This part of the country is top for watersports too, and guests can try out waterskiing, diving, windsurfing and sailing within easy reach. Don’t be lured away just yet, though. Heated indoor and outdoor pools on site will ensure everyone has a splashingly good time (swimming lessons can be had during high season too), and those keener on staying dry can visit the chickens, turtles and rabbits in the animal farm, have a go at pétanque, try out archery, volleyball and darts, and putt around the nine-hole miniature golf course. For an added treat, there are ponies on site for a bit of horse riding, and grownups can treat themselves to hammam sessions, massages and new hairdos in the on-site spa. It’s easy to keep the whole family fed on site too. If self-catering is preferred, there’s a supermarket, daily bread service and shared barbecue. Otherwise, take a break from cooking and toddle along to the bar-restaurant (which also operates a takeaway service), then stick about for evenings of karaoke, dance, live music and circus acrobatics.

Local attractions

When time among the rich and famous begins to beckon, the site is well-placed for forays to and from all the hotspots. Both Saint-Tropez and Cannes are handily within an hour’s drive, and guests would do well to venture to the former for beaches, modern art museums and chic restaurants, while the latter is a top choice for clifftop forts, galleries, museums and, of course, the eponymous film festival. The smaller resort town of Antibes is 50 minutes away, and is a must for explores of the Picasso museum and Fort Carré, but is perhaps most likely to draw a crowd with the shows and animals at Marineland. If that has kids buzzing for more activity, the site’s 10 minutes from Aqualand waterpark and the rides of Luna Park. Tiring of the crush of humanity? Take some time away from the crowds with a trip into Préalpes d’Azur Regional Natural Park (45 minutes) or towards the Estérel Massif for some rural peace, before diving back into the fray with explores of Fréjus – and visits to its Roman remains, archaeological museums and, of course, shops – 10 minutes from base.
