It’s no wonder this Hérault site chose to mention sand in its name – it’s a mere 800-metre stroll or bike ride from Camping Les Sables du Midi to the beach at Valras-Plage, which stretches out over a splendid four kilometres of Mediterranean shoreline (plenty of space to go round, plus seafront cafés and play areas like the fab pirate ship).
But although the beach may be close by, you don’t even have to venture that far for a swim: non, you need only wander to the pool complex, which has two heated and lifeguarded pools, waterslides, a paddling pool, a kids’ aquasplash zone and a Jacuzzi where the grownups can be pummelled by massage jets.
Away from the water, there’s plenty more, including a gym, a video games room, a pétanque court, table tennis and assorted sporting endeavours including basketball matches and Zumba classes. Muscles aching a tad after that little lot? Send the nippers off to one of the kids’ club activities and book yourself in for a massage at the wellbeing centre.
As befits a site with so many things to do, there are plenty of ways to eat and drink around here too: take your pick from two restaurants, a bar, and a takeaway service. There’s also the option to cook your own (seeing as gas or wood barbecues are provided with all the caravans) – pick up supplies at the site supermarket or make your way up to Serignan (five minutes’ drive) for more serious stocking up.

Local attractions
Several spectacularly scenic spots are near the holiday park, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Canal du Midi, running for 240 kilometres through green landscape. Boat cruises, hiking and horse riding are all popular in the flat landscape around the water – although cycling types might like to follow one of the (easier) parts of the Tour de France route.
Further north of Les Sables du Midi are the deep and narrow Hérault Gorges (an hour and a half’s drive) in a wild area that can be explored on kayaking, climbing and canyoning trips. If that’s not your wild style, aim instead for Réserve Africaine de Sigean (40 minutes), to see African beasts roaming with a Mediterranean backdrop.
Also within reach are the medieval walls and 53 towers of Carcassonne (an hour) and the seaside resort Cap d’Agde (25 minutes), referred to by locals as the smaller version of Saint-Tropez. This is the place to go for boat tours, diving and hours of keeping les enfants entertained at the amusement park Toonsland and the waterpark Aqualand.
