Spectacular views of the snow-capped Pyrenees will greet you in the morning (and warm the cockles of your heart throughout the day) at K-Hutes, an adults-only site on the outskirts of the French village of Castaignos-Souslens (10 minutes’ walk). This intimate place occupies two hectares of meadows on a gentle hill overlooking the forested landscape of the Landes department, in the south-western corner of the country. Accommodation here is very much of the glamping type. Luxury, eco-friendly cabins come with sumptuously plush beds, a seating area with a woodburning stove and a well-equipped bathroom. Oh, and French windows leading to a terrace with those unforgettable views… Simple touches (from the decorative artworks scattered in the living area to the green-and-white tiles in the bathroom) create a cosy, sophisticated vibe. On site are an orchard, a permaculture vegetable garden and happy, free-roaming chickens, whose eggs you can gather in the morning for your breakfast (or for a dinner omelette, as you prefer). Owners Justine and Hugo will also be happy to prepare a dinner hamper for you, featuring (among other things) those home-grown veggies. For anything else you might need, there is a supermarket en route to Hagetmau and a range of shops and restaurants in Sault-de-Navailles (both 10 minutes’ drive). If you’ve left it too late to sort out your dinner plans and you’re in a pinch, there’s a machine dispensing pizzas on the RD933S road (10 minutes’ walk).

Local attractions

You’re in the heart of the wine-producing Chalosse region here, so spend a day exploring local vineyards and wineries, before heading to Mugron (half an hour’s drive) to visit the huge Chai d’Antin. A former wine storehouse, this 17th-century timber structure now hosts exhibitions by local artists and craftspeople. The Chalosse Museum in Montfort-en-Chalosse (half an hour) illustrates the history and culture of the local area with its collections of richly embroidered regional costumes and textiles, decorated furniture, and agricultural and artisanal implements. The Tour de la Haute Chalosse hiking trail passes just down the road from the museum, and you can follow it east to Mugron or south to Caupenne (a two-hour hike each way). On the Ousse river, the city of Pau (55 minutes) is known as the birthplace of Henry IV. Check out the 14th-century chateau where the monarch was born, with its collections of tapestries, portraits and decorative objects, then go for a stroll in leafy Parc Beaumont.
