You’re in the heart of the wine-producing Chalosse region here, so spend a day exploring local vineyards and wineries, before heading to Mugron (half an hour’s drive) to visit the huge Chai d’Antin. A former wine storehouse, this 17th-century timber structure now hosts exhibitions by local artists and craftspeople. The Chalosse Museum in Montfort-en-Chalosse (half an hour) illustrates the history and culture of the local area with its collections of richly embroidered regional costumes and textiles, decorated furniture, and agricultural and artisanal implements. The Tour de la Haute Chalosse hiking trail passes just down the road from the museum, and you can follow it east to Mugron or south to Caupenne (a two-hour hike each way). On the Ousse river, the city of Pau (55 minutes) is known as the birthplace of Henry IV. Check out the 14th-century chateau where the monarch was born, with its collections of tapestries, portraits and decorative objects, then go for a stroll in leafy Parc Beaumont.
