The spectacular landscape of Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes National Park (home to – yes – clear-water lakes, but also dramatic waterfalls, dense woodland and subterranean cave systems) is within your grasp at Camp Korana. This large family- and dog-friendly site is a five-minute drive from the visitors’ entrance to the nature reserve. It stretches over 35 hectares between the D1 highway and the Korana river, which – fun fact – is fed by the waterfalls in the park. See how it’s all connected? Guests can choose their favourite spot to set up on site: will you favour a peaceful corner shaded by the trees or perhaps a remote hilltop pitch so as to make the most of the splendid views? Whatever you decide, chances are you can’t wait to start exploring this area in the southern reaches of Karlovac County. Nordic walking poles (available for hire) will help you navigate this mountainous terrain; if hilly ascents don’t faze you one bit, you can also hire a bike at reception. Amenities include a large, airy restaurant, with plenty of outdoor seating on a terrace with views of the river and the hills. In the summer months, the terrace becomes the stage for evening entertainments such as music concerts. In addition to a modern toilet block (with showers) and a washing-up area, there’s a small shop on site for your essentials; for anything else you might need, the D1 highway is dotted with supermarkets (the nearest is a five-minute walk from Camp Korana, part of a small shopping centre with a pizza place and a petrol station).

Liked: Sehr schön gelegen, kurze Anreise zu dem Nationalpark; es fährt ein Shuttlebus morgens um 9 Uhr, der jedoch keine Hunde mitnimmt; wenn man selbst fährt fallen Parkgebühren im Nationalpark an ( in der Nachsaison 1,50 Euro / Stunde); es lohnt sich aber auf jeden Fall, sehr schöne Landschaft. Der Campingplatz ist sehr weitläufig, durch die freie Platzzahl sehr aufgelockert. Die Sanitären anlagen waren sehr sauber, das Restaurant vor Ort sehr zu empfehlen.

Liked: Greatest camp i've been in terms of the pitch itself. It has a great terrain disposition and you are free to choose wherever fits you the most. Very king personel as well. The reception girl was very kind. Very close to the entry of the plitvice lakes, 8 minutes and you are there. Loved it. Couldn't be more satisfied.

Disliked: The size of the field was so big that the sanitary facilities were too far from the closest ones

Liked: Il campeggio è molto grande e ben tenuto. C’è la possibilità di scegliere qualunque punto per mettere la tenda senza puzzole predefinite. È possibile mettere la macchina in qualunque punto. I bagni sono puliti e ampi.

Disliked: Ci sono poche colonne con le spine per i caricatori.

Liked: Camping muy bien ubicado para ver lagos Pletvice. Camping completo. Mucho espacio para acampar. Baños limpios. Personal amable. Supermercado completo y buen precio. Wifi excelente.

Disliked: Precio lavadora un poco caro.

Liked: Beautifull natural surrounding of camping site, quiet place, niet foodprocessor restaurant

Liked: The bathrooms r clean and spacious, staff extremely accomodating. Various places to pick, well stocked and not too overpriced shop.

Disliked: The restaurant was closed - i get that the weather was bad etc, just keep in mind u cannot rely on it being open, despite the opening hours advertised.

Liked: Großer Campingplatz, saubere Sanitäranlagen. Die freie Platzwahl war sehr einladend, somit war für jeden was dabei

Disliked: Leider waren die Stellplätze nahe den Zugangsstraßen oft mit Hanglage oder schlammig. Das sollte vielleicht verbessert werden. Vereinzelt gab es zu wenig Strom an brauchbaren Plätzen, wie wir es bevorzugen

Liked: Fine toilet og bade faciliteter. Hyggelig restaurant med et hold flinke tjenere.

Disliked: Lidt for få strømudtag på pladserne ned mod floden. Lå lidt for tæt på hovedvejen, hvor motorcyklerne gav den fuld gas.

Local attractions

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Plitvice Lakes National Park is home to large Lake Kozjak. Explore it on a rowing boat (which you can hire on the eastern bank) or admire its clear waters from a number of self-guided circular trails that might also take you past neighbouring Lake Prošćansko and the Great Waterfall. During your wanderings, you might spot woodpeckers, owls and birds of prey. Don’t forget a cardigan if you visit the Caves of Barać (15 minutes’ drive), where the temperature barely reaches double digits (it’s a distinctly chilly 9ºC). Locally discovered artefacts indicate that these subterranean caverns were inhabited by lions and bears during the Ice Age. A guided tour takes you past stalagmites and other rock formations. The Nikola Tesla Memorial Centre, in Smiljan (one hour and 15 minutes), is a complex that includes the 19th-century inventor’s childhood home, where interactive displays illustrate his life, experiments and inventions.
